have you tried gluten-free or dairy free diet?

Tue, 04/17/2007 - 22:58
I've been searching all over the place for information on kids and epilepsy...a few references to gluten and dairy have popped up as triggers for seizures. Anyone tried a gluten-free and/or dairy-free diet with their kid and if yes, what did you find? (my daughter is nearly 4) I'm thinking of trying gluten-free, maybe then dairy-free, though I'm not sure I could do both at the same time. I just read someone's post on one of my previous posts about a book on kids and epilepsy...I will have to check it out. Sofar still no obvious 2nd seizure but also no second neurologist yet... Hi MargieI'm an epileptic

Hi MargieI'm an epileptic diagnosed about 20 years. By need I had to eliminate foods. It was not too difficult to figure the first when every time I ate it I got sores in my mouth. SOY is an absolute no for me. O my goodness finding products and learning to eat without it left me questioning whether I should just put up with being sick. Now I have anaphylaxis is I have any.I still remained sick even though I removed soy. I started having to consider every food I ate, I could spend hours with food poisoning symptoms, have terrible blind/dizzy spells, days of seizures and severe vitamin deficiency. It has taken years to figure what I can and cannot eat. Most recently I have been in contact with my pharmacies to be sure that there are none of my major allergens are in my meds. Sadly, all of my seizure medicine are not allergy free and there seems to be no alternative yet.If it helps this is a sampleNO'SSoy. I went all vegan and gluten

I went all vegan and gluten free. It's very hard, but I had to do it. I was having 15-20 seizures a day even on 5 medications. But now that I've been following his new diet plan, I'm only having one or two every month.

Hi Margie, I am a mom with epilepsy but I wanted to let you know of a site www. dogtorj.tripod.com. He has theories about allergies and seizures and also has some links that are useful by families who recommend what products to buy and where to find them. I tried going gluten, casein, and soy, nut free as he suggested. I only did it for 2 weeks but I felt better and had a much happier mood than I had for long time, (maybe forever). I would recommend going with one change for a while and get used to it. You can't just take away dairy unless you have another source of calcium- very important for growing bodies. I started out on the diet doing great but can't drive. So I wasn't really prepared, couldn't get to the right stores to buy gluten free, and gave up. I am going to try again but much slower. You really need to be prepared in advance- it's hard to eat no gluten. I intend to get recipes and order online the special flour and guar? (not sure if that's the right word). I went to my local health food stores but even there the selection was small. Everything has wheat and if it doesn't it's loaded with soy or nuts or dairy. That is why I think you will really need to find recipes for some things your daughter will miss and have all you need ready ahead. I would seriously get a nutrionist if you try this. My daughter was diagnosed with failure to thrive and her nutritionist said it was not good to just take away gluten and dairy unless you are making sure your child has all the other nutrients and calories they need to grow. It really should be a group effort with your health care team. Beth Israel where I went does show some people with celiacs have seizures so it's not unheard of. Just make sure your new neuro is open to this first maybe by calling and asking questions. I hope all goes well for you, Wendy
