Epilepsy Mom

Hi I'm new to this group. I have a two year old son that has been battling with epilepsy since he was 9months. At one point my son was on six different medications, he's know on three. He's takes Phenobarbital, Vimpat, and Valporic acid. We are now trying to wean him off of the phenobarbital, but it really hard. My son suffers from a lot of developmental delays due to he's seizures. He doesn't talk and has trouble doing things that come easy for other kids. I just wanna get some feedback on what other meds are out there and will he every be able to just be a normal child!

There are many meds out there

There are many meds out there. All of the ones that are available and on the market have been approved. They have all been tested and once out they don't stop the testing. A med created to control partial seizures and is approved is then tested for other types of seizures. They are then tested to see which medications they can be coupled with. There is no one size fits all medication because each persons body is different from everybody elses  Dosages are just like that.  Think about meds like food. Can everybody eat the same amount and the same thing without any reactions? That answer is NO. Some people can't use mike or are lactose intollerant. With others eggs are a NO NO . As for weaning him off phenobarb I would suggest it. Phenobarb slows people down it calms the nervious system down. I know I took it for years. That med could be a reason his development is slower then other kids his age. I was a teen when I was started in it. To control my seizures I was on enough phenobarb to put a man to sleep for 24 hours. Couple that with dilantin and tegratol and yo uhave one wicked cocktail. Vimpat is good and I take it along with keppra. I also took depakote which did work but I wanted better control Keppra and vimpat have been the best meds I have taken in the 50+ years I have been living and dealing with epilepsy. Will he ever be able to just be a normal kid????  What is normal???? I understand where you are comming from you want your child to be able to do what other kids do. But there could be other factors causing some of his issues. So relax a little see what weaning him off phenobarb does. Once that happens then look at the other things that could be causing issues. I hope this helps
