College son - mood changes, academic issues, need advice!

Thu, 07/23/2015 - 18:27

I've searched & can't find anything like my question, so here it is: my almost 20 yr old son was diagnosed with absence seizures at age 16. Takes 500 mg Keppra. He was top 20 in his class. Grades slipped, suffered major depression. Got back on top of things, did well on testing and attends a great college in engineering. 1st semester was awful (1.0). Put him on nuvigil and grades improved (3.3). Home for the summer & he is a different kid. Mopey, moody, sleeps all the time, failing 2 summer classes, fired from his job, etc, etc. Don't know as a Mom if I blame it on epilepsy, meds, depression/anxiety that go with epilepsy (he refuses to even discuss & says no more meds) or is it teenage boy who is just lacking in motivation for the summer? How do I hold him accountable? His neuro is a friend, but will not even discuss med changes bc keppra seems to control them. Most recent EEG shows marked improvement, but still some irritability. I'm at a loss & broken hearted to see my once bright & motivated child fail and talk about how overwhelmed he is:(
