3 year old with complex partial/generalized

Tue, 04/19/2016 - 09:55
Morning. My son was recently diagnosed with epilepsy and has had complex partial or generalized seizures. His first seizure was due to a fever. His second one was not associated with a fever. He had a seizure on Saturday, his 3rd right around nap time and then a 4th that evening close to bed time. Each time he's acted normal afterwards. Doctor started him on 1ML of keppra twice day and since then he's hasn't acted the same. EEG and CAT scans were normal. He seems like he's drunk sometimes. I'm a parent of fraternal twins and not handling this very well. Is the "drunk" behavior normal when going on keppra? If yes, how long will it last? I'm worried that he's just not going to be the same kid before taking the med and I'm looking to connect with anyone with experience in these situations. The majority of what I read is kinda negative and right now I need the positives. Thanks

WelcomeMothers are great and want the kids taken care of.Medications for seizures are not like aspirin where onc takn it is gone after a few hours. They work on the central nervous system calming or slowing down the electrical impulses so they hit right. The EEG is a test showing the electrical output comming from the brain. You posted it and the CAT came out normal. Which is good but understand that they can still come out normal and he can still have seizures. I had 20-25 different EEG's that came back normal. The one that didn't I fell asleep in.As for keppra and what you have read espeically if it was posted by people who have used it may sound bad. I know I have read some of it. My neurologists group in one of the groups of neurologists that do testing for new drugs (medications) and I have been in several tests. They last for months and in many cases get extended. I know how the lists of side effects get listed. I know that side effects do exist and the percentages of people that get them. With most side effects listed there are 5-8% of the people taking that medication that will get one or another side effect. Those are the people that made the posts about how bad it was or something else about it not doing what it says it will do. Which means that 92-95% of the people taking it have had no problems with it and things have been just fine. I know I have been taking keppra  for about 15 years. Now it takes time for his body to get used to the medication. about 4-6 weeks. The dosages are set and the medication builds up in his body so he will have a therapeutic level in him. Which helps if a dose is missed ot late. It can help keep a break through seizure from happening. Been there done that. I was on different meds when I was diagnosed back in the 60's. Oh and the meds back then were not great. One of the reasons I was in the tests was because I wanted newer medications with fewer side effects. Phenobarbitol is still being used and I was taking enough in one day to put the average man to sleep for 24 hours. On a trip in the car I was asleep half way down the block. Doing things I had no problem with I played sports and did everything I was doing before I was diagnosed. So yes he will get back to his being a kid that will rile you at times. You want positives..... I was diagnosed in 63-64 and I have used almost every medication listed and it's generic. They all worked at helping stop my seizures. But the best medication I have ever used in the 50+ years I have been dealing with epilepsy is the one your kid is being put on. Keppra not only reduced the number of seizures I was having. It also shortened the time in those seizures. My seizures could be considered simple partial. Now I have both a GP and my neurologiat. Different hospitals. GP has seen me in seizures and he kknew they lasted 3-8 minutes and it took another 15-45 minutes to get back to normal. Last July I had an appointment with him and while we were discussing something I had a seizure. It lasted a few seconds and I was back and finishing my sentence in another few seconds. At the ned of the visit I asked him what he thought the delay was in my sencence. He thought I was thinking of a word I wanted to use. When I told him it was one of my seizures now he was amazed andtold me he was glad that I didn't change my neurologist. The end of the month I had to change my neurologist since he retired. I went ot one he refered me to.So let him go like he is now if his drunk behavpor is there after a month then talk to the neurologist them. Oh and please used the other areas in this sit. There are places you can find all kinds of things. Like th My Epilepsy Diary which can be used to note his seizures and other things like meds and yes it can tell you when it needs to be ordered so look at it I think they still have the video. Also give the neurologist permission to bring it up and the graaphs and other information on it can help with meds and procedures that can help control he seizuresI hope this helps and he gets seizure freeJoe
