22 Month old new to this need some HELP!

Mon, 11/27/2006 - 11:19
My 22 month old started at 20 months to have small episodes where when woken up out of a deep sleep her arms would shoot out and eyes roll up (not back) for a split second and this would happen about 5 times in a 5-10 minute time period. After an EEG the doctor concluded she has abnormal spikes in the left side as well as all over. Focal and Absence seizures is what I was told they were called :) She has only had 4 episodes and all occured when woken up and a light was turned on immediately. Well after visiting with the doctor today he gave me 3 choices of medication. 2 could cause liver damage and my daughter would constantly have to have blood work or the 3rd was the safest side effect wise. Well I came home and researched and found that the medication I have a precription for has only been around 6 years. It is called Keppro or Keppra. Does anyone have their child on this???? Please help me! Thanks so much. ~Stef

I am very sorry that your daughter is having seziures..my daughter was diagnosed at 6 months (she will be 4 in dec.)We have been on alot of different meds but I can say that the one we are on know seems to be working the best at controlling her sz. It was a rough road at first but we stuck it out on this med. (Keppra) She was mean and whinny and if you look at my blog it was not a pretty picture when we first starting taking this but it has proved to be the best thing for her. She had not gained weight in over a year she was still having some pretty big sz and some sz were coming back to back.so our dr wanted us to change to Keppra i was scared of it because it was so new,but after we got use to the medicine and got her on the right dose she has done great and we are sticking with Keppra for now. I wish you the best of luck and know that this "game of medicines" as I like to call it is a hard one somethimes, we have been on 4 different kinds but you have to find the one that is right for your child and their sz. Feel free to e-mail me anytime you want. My blog is under the name Emily Klair's seizures...feel free to read it. Emily Klair's mom....Kari
