Epileptic Brain Activity Without Seizures

Fri, 10/07/2016 - 12:58
Hi guys, This might be a little long, so I'll try to get right to the point. Hopefully someone here can shed some light on what has happened to me. Maybe it's a big deal and maybe it's not. For virtually the entire year of 2015, the centre of my lower lip twitched so slightly that no one else would notice it unless I pointed it out to them. It rarely went even an hour without starting up again and twitched almost continuously. Near the end of the year, I went to see my doctor who referred me to a neurologist, thinking that the neurologist would give me botox to deaden the tissue and prevent it from twitching. The neurologist appointment did not come until July of this year, and the twitching had long since stopped. But, I decided to go to the appointment anyway. The neurologist thought the twitching was absolutely nothing but opted to send me for an EEG and a CT just in case. After two EEG's I've found out that I have an epileptic brain abnormality. Basically, my brain has epilepsy, but I'm not diagnosed with Epilepsy because I haven't had an seizures. My neurologist, however, strongly considered taking my license away because I could have a seizure at any moment, even though I never have. After grilling my husband on my behaviour, he decided not to take away my license, but did warn me not to have baths, spend extended time driving or looking at a screen. So, I'm not diagnosed with epilepsy, but he would not be at all surprised if I had a seizure, at which point, I would be diagnosed with epilepsy. Has anyone ever heard of this before? It seems so strange to me. I have basically no history of epilepsy in my family and I'm afraid that maybe I will have a seizure one day. Thanks for reading. :S Input would be greatly appreciated.

twitching lip many times.

twitching lip many times. Doctor reffered you to a neurologist..The Botox might not have been your doctors thinking. Twitching had stopped. Went anyway. neurologist sent you for an EEG and CT.. Great TESTS done to find information out. One is a brain wave test showing the electrical activity in your brain. The other what your brain looks like. The EEG shows the electrical activity in your brain during the time you were having them..Now there is a difference between epileptoform and a seizure. Epileptiform is electrical activity wich can cause a seizure. Kind of like the EKG (actifivity in your heart) shows if you have a heart problem. Heart issues can also be many. A-fib, A-flutter, irregular heart beat and others. So the electrical actigity is showing or giving information. Meaning your brain doesn't have epilepsy but you sure might. Now was the neurologist a specialist in epilepsy? That question does need an answer. neurologists that specialize in epilepsy treat epilepsy only. A regular neurologist treats anything coming from the central nervous system. Be it epilepsy, ADHD, Parkinsons, ALHZ or PTSD and there are meny others. Generally when a neurologist sees abnormalities they know where in your brain they came from. Now the neurologist almost had your license revoked. There is a reason for that. Each state has laws about people that have seizures and driving. There is a time period they must go thru without a seizure before it can be used again. Those lip twitches would have been thought more of if the  neurologist had been a specialist. Mainly because not all seizures are those that most people think about. Most people think a seizure is someone that blacked out and is in a convulsion. Sorry but there are many different types of seizures. A person that looks like they are daydreaming could be having a absence seizure (petite mal). Some people that have muscle jerks aka twitches could be having myoclonic seizure, Which could be what your lip could have doing. Now the neurologist may nor have diagnosed you with epilepsy. But he started to revoke your license. He knows that abnormalities can cause an electrical impulse to hit wrong at times. He also knows a seizure starts by an electrical impulse hittint wrong in the brain. The seizure itself is the chain reaction cause by that wrong hit.. He stated he would not be surprised if you didn't have a seizure. Anybody at agy age can get epilepsy and it doesn't run in most people with epilepsys families. You even areafraid you might have a seizure one day.  Well this is where you can find a lot of information. About the different types of seizures and types of epilepsy and many other things. Research by starting in the learn section. After the research and you are questing more then call the neurologist and see just what he thought. Understand that yes a person can go periods of time. But if you think yo umay have a seizure then you may want to look at trearment and the neurologist is the one that can give you that information. I know I went months without a seizure I even went 3 years. But I still took medication and still do.I hope this helpsJoe

This is me. I started seeing

This is me. I started seeing a neuro because I was constantly smelling horrible odors that I couldn't get away from. In my case it was stale cigarette smoke. After a MRI, CT scan and EEG the only thing they found was abnormal brain activity. After a 5 day EEG, they diagnosed me with epilepsy. I am 50 years old, still a little shocked with the diagnosis and currently taking 100 mg of vimpat 2x a day. Keppra increased my anxiety to a crazy level. I have NEVER had a seizure and I'm working on a second opinion because before reading your post, I had never heard of epilepsy without seizures! I was told the horrible smell was an aura. Good luck on your journey.
