Seizure use Cannibis?

Mon, 03/27/2017 - 15:35
Hi, I am 35yrs and have an average of 1 grand mal every 2.5 years. I am thinking on using cannabis when I feel it coming on. Does anyone do this or have any experience on whether it helps the immediate situation? Currently not on any meds. My theory is to take cannabis when symptoms come on and be back to normal in a few minutes without having the grand mal.

I'm 36 and have focal

I'm 36 and have focal temporal seizures progress to generalized tonic clonic seizures. I've used cannabis since high school long before I started having seizures 4 years ago after a MVA fractured vertebrae and messed up my sleep. My cannabis use increased at that time. For me cannabis has not stopped my seizures but I think it has helped with sleep (sleep study showed average of 27 spontaneous arousals an hour or sleep intervals of only 2 or 3 minutes all night long). Disrupted sleep and sleep deprivation is a known trigger for seizures and some strains, particularly "indicas" are helpful with sleep and pain whereas "Sativas" are known to be better for depression and increasing energy. By helping me sleep better I think cannabis has helped stretch the time between seizure events and possibly prevent some seizures events which often happen in my sleep or within 5 minutes of waking up but I have no way of really knowing or proving that. Cannabis definitely helps me with my back pain from compression fractured vertebrae which helps me sleep also. My auras of focal seizures only last 30-60 seconds before they progress to generalized tonic clonic seizures so I wouldn't have time to smoke/vaporize more than 1 hit though that could be enough to delay the seizure from progressing in order to smoke/vaporize again- this is only an idea I have not tried it myself, I do not smoke but do have an electric vaporizer pen thing that is ready in seconds that I might try and probably should? Ive tried pretty much everything else from Drs. I have tried taking cannabis oil at the onset of the focal seizure aura but again this did not stop the seizure from progressing to generalized tonic clonic seizure but it seemed to have a shorter seizure duration and i did not bite my tongue as badly as usual though still bleeding a lot. This concentrated cannabis oil from CO2 extraction is the only thing that I can put on my tongue after biting it that is soothing and doesn't hurt. Edibles don't act fast enough unless you are able to tell you have a seizure coming on at least 30 minutes ahead of time. Looking back, I feel I sometimes should have been able to tell I was having a seizure coming days ahead of time but it isn't until that 30-60 before it hits that I consciously realize it. So part of it is going to be how much of a warning do you get and what would work in time to be effective? I basically use it like Rx where I try to use the same amount each day to effectively help my back pain and sleep and that way I get used to it and don't feel "high" and since cannabis stays in your system so long you can maintain a constant level in your system like they try to do with Rx's. Another big thing it has helped me with is dealing with many of the messed up side effects from the various Rx's I had to try out like a lab rat to see what works. Cannabis could put a smile on my face even when i was a doped Dilantin/depakote zombie or make me eat on keppra. Keppra really got to me bad in the end (figured out im allergic to it now) and I would routinely go 24-48 hours between meals and cannabis is probably one of the only reasons I actually ate any food during that time. It also helped take the edginess off and helped bring some more patience into my mood when feeling angry at the life situation, Rx, side effects, Dr, depression, lack of freedom/income, insurance... it's kind of like everything else and going to be different for everybody so try it a little at a time and see if it agrees with you. If you feel better at all it is working and try more. If not try a different strain or kind and again take it slow. Experiment to see what works best and talk to other people you know who use cannabis or talk to the people in the medical cannabis clinics, they will be able to recommend different strains for different conditions wether it be seizures/depression/cancer/pain/sleep etc and let you know what works for other patients. They pretty much all have a 100% satisfaction guaranteed deal so If it doesn't make you feel better you can take it back for a refund or try another kind until you find the right one for you. I'll also say that cannabis has a side effect profile that is practically not even worth mentioning compared to what we deal with from most anti-epileptic drugs. Some of the side effects are why it is beneficial and useful in the first place "munchies" are a good example it can stimulate appetite in people who otherwise couldn't eat or sleep etc.

I have seen videos on youtube

I have seen videos on youtube of people using a cannabis nasal spray on people including young children having tonic clonic generalized seizures and it stopping them within seconds. I do not have access to that here in NM but a friend tried to make it for me but basically had to guess at the recipe since it is patented and a trade secret. Families move entire states to get access to this -would be nice if it was available everywhere especially for people who can't afford to just move for a Rx. I would also recommend using products from cannabis sativa rather than from hemp. Cannabis sativa has way more cannabinoids and in high concentrations than hemp. Also not everyone out there growing it is doing it organically or with you health in mind and are really just trying to make money like the Rx companies. This includes many if the "medical" cannabis producers out there that look nice/fancy/trendy in the clinic but would be different if you walked through the their grow facility, saw the chemicals they use, and crude extraction techniques and equipment for making some of their products. This is definitely a place where quality is very much more important than quantity.
