Don't give Depakote to your girls!

Wed, 10/11/2006 - 22:07
My 8 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome), which causes diabetes, cardiovascular problems, infertility, acne and more. And the likely culprit -- DEPAKOTE. Be warned, do some research, speak to your doctor, don't risk your daughter's future.

What were the symptoms that lead you to find this out? I am not on Depakote now, but I have been in the past.

Sorry it took so long to reply... I took my daughter in to se an endocrinologist, innocently, because of excess facial hair, and the beginnings of pubic hair, at 7 years old. She was otherwise outwardly healthy. After ultrasound and blood testing, we discovered multiple follicles/cysts in her ovaries. I am still trying to figure out how we'll treat her. I've forgotten about the hair issue. PCOS is a serious condition. The usual symptoms, besides excess hair, are: irregular menstruation, obesity, diabetes and hypertension. It causes infertility, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, endometrial cancer. So, I'm glad she's now off the Depakote, but PCOS is not reversible, and if not treated, gets progressively worse.

I am now 36yrs old. I have had epilepsy for 28yrs. And was on Depekote(aka valporic acid)for roughly 17yrs. Another side effect that they do not tell you about is that it "eats" away the enamel on your teeth! Yes, it is true. I am now 36yrs old and have had to get dentures because of Depekote. Also another side effect that the doctors neglect to tell you is that if not properly monitored the amonia level in your system can raise to lethal levels, which mine did and I was in a coma for a period of time. But thanks to my CURRENT neuro, I was quickly "yanked" off the Depekote and literally rescued from it. While it is true that all anti-seizure medications react differently for everyone...it is my opinion...STAY AWAY FROM IT!!! Best of luck and I hope everything works out for your daughter! Marianne
