In Desperate Need of New Seizure Med Regime!

Tue, 05/30/2006 - 13:34
My son is 10 with frontal lobe epilepsy. He experiences constant abnormal discharges in both sides - sometimes all 4 - of his brain. He has an extremely difficult time focusing and this year we saw a major decrease in his academic abilities - although in 4th grade, he is now functioning at a upper 2nd grade level. Last yr in 3rd grade he did very well. We have asked his drs about it but they have no solution. He currently takes trileptal, topamax and diazepam(valium) to control his seizures & abnormal discharges. Does anyone know of any better seizure med combo that has been working well for them and without such poor side effects? He also suffers every spring with a mood/anxiety/depression disorder & facial/vocal tics his dr says is directly related to the discharges. In the meantime, he has lost almost all of his friends and has no desire whatsoever to play or do anything other than watch tv or lay on the couch. HELP US PLEASE!!! thank you, Jack's Mom PS..he has also gained a lot of weight in his belly area where he used to always be slender..any ideas??

Everyone is different. What works for me may not work for him. I also deal with anxiety. Make sure he is exercising can help with anxiety. Breathing techniques can help with anxiety and also seizures. Look into alternative approaches, Ketogenic diet, neurofeedback, Omega three fatty acids, vitamins, .. Watch out for MSG, aspartame can cause seizures. Check out info in links and files in http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/ take care Lisa

i have the same problem and was put on trazodone to help controll the mood swings and it seems to help also with the seizures from stress. i am down to 1 every 3or 4 months instead of every week or so. and this has helped with my energy level so i want to do more than just lie around.

Does he go to an epilepsy specialist or a neuro? A second opinion by an epilepsy specialist would be my suggestion. A child's system is different from adults and all meds affect each of us differently so it would be really hard to suggest what has worked for one as working for the other. Here is a link that will suggest epilepsy specialists in your area. http://www.epilepsy.com/dr_redirect.html Take care! -Spiz
