New neuro needed? 4 day eeg needed?

Sat, 02/09/2008 - 17:27
Well This story is rather long but I'll keep it short ;). So basically I had my first seizure (Grand mal) jan. 5th, second the 25th, after my first I discovered this website, and found out I was also having mynoclonic seizures, and absences, AND simple complex. I scheduled an appt. with my normal doctor after the second seizure, and he refereed me to a neuro, and also gave me a months worth of depakote (for the nero wait). Inbetween the depakote didn't help me with my other types of seizures. (But didn't experiance a simple complex) so my hopes were rather low. I was really pumped to go to the neuro and get on new meds so HOPEFULLY I could get this undercontrol. When I got to his office we did the normal examination and such, and then he asked me to tell him about one of the events, and from here is where it gets rather messy, I was explaining my aura when he said "its impossible to have a seizure and have movments in both body apendexs; also note the twitching was apart of my aura) Then he went off on telling me if it was a real seizure I wouldn't have remebered what happend. (well remeber I was describing the aura? If he wouldn't have inturupted me he wouldve heard I said i then passed out) he read my EEG (which i took a week before) and told me "i dont think you have a seizure disorder" which i was rather flustered to hear because I went with the hopes of getting whatever was wrong with me under control (note 1 of my Tonic clonics was witnessed) He then suggested I had a tick, or I had Syncope. He Claims the only way I can be diagnosed is to take a 4 day EEG, but I feel that this will be costly and unnecessary, I just want your opinions if I should get a second opinion, and support, as I wrote this most out of rage =/. Its rather frustrating, well thanks. If you'd like to share some of your (ex?)doctors foolish mistakes then go ahead maybe it will make me feel better ;). Sorry for the sloppy posting not feeling quiet myself.

I am sorry to hear that you are going through this.  My seizures went undiagnosed for years.  I have petit mal (absence) seizures which include an aura/de ja vu feeling and difficulty breathing and for years I was diagnosed with everything from asthma to depression to anxiety attacks.

It wasn't until I was hospitalized for a weeklong daily EEG monitoring when I was 16 that I was diagnosed with petit mal seizures.  Note that this was about 7-8 years after I first began having symptoms.

A 4 day EEG may be costly but EEG's track brain activity so unless you have a seizure during your EEG, it's unlikely that the EEG will catch any abnormalities in your brain activity.  Prior to my weeklong EEG, I had had several hour-long EEGs and even an EEG monitoring I took home for several days but because I didn't have a seizure during any of those times, all of these EEG's returned normal.  I would say, give it a shot.

Good luck!

Thanks for your comment, I'm going in for a second opinion which is rather relieving, my new neuro is a private practice and said they've had very bad experiences with my (current) neuro. Also I felt a Tad out of place being 16 at a Pediatric neuro. If they suggest a 4 day EEG, I probably will do that. if anyones here i'll update this = P
