Has anyone had a Intracerebral Depth Electrode Monitoring?

Wed, 09/20/2006 - 17:06
I am a candiate for a right temporal lobectomy. Tuesday, Oct 10th I am going in for a Intracerebral Depth Electrode Monitoring test. It's similar to Video/EEG monitoring with the exception of they are going to drill small holes into my skull and place the electrodes directly on the brain. This is mainly because the other tests-MRI, Video monitoring,PET Scan,WADA,MRI#2 are not conclusive that my seizures are only on the right temporal lobe. They said I would leave the hospital with a moderately severe headache(no duh) Anyway, wondering if anyone has had this test - what the outcome was.

Hi Suzie, If you look under 'Surgery' you will read that many have had this test. I had my LTL last January, but never had the test as it wasn't required. Hope that helps ~sol

Hi Suzie, Yes, I had the depth electrode monitoring. In my case, they knew that my seizures were coming from the LTL, but were unsure of the exact spot and whether it was safe to remove the focus. The surgery was rather intense. I woke in the recovery room and immediately put my hand to my head in absolutely intense pain. I couldn't begin to describe how it felt. Early the next morning, in ICU, I began having seizures. They put me back on my phenobarbital that afternoon and I was fine for several hours. My surgery (to remove the focus) was scheduled for the next morning, but I awoke to seizures. The seizures weren't too bad in the early morning of surgery, but quickly became non-stop for a couple of hours. I had *never* gone status epilepticus before. But, I suppose the stress of surgery brought it on. At least I was in ICU, under constant care by a nurse. The next thing I knew, it was late at night after the second surgery. I was moved to a regular room in the VEEG area of the hospital the day after the seizure focus was removed. I had chosen a private room (thank God!) because I couldn't take much noise. My head hurt so bad, I remember a nurse comforting me one night (after giving me a pain med) as I cried. I was in that 33%ile where no meds work on the headache. That part of it was utter he!! Thankfully, the pain did become less intense about 4 weeks after and was gone around 6 weeks after. The jawpain was also very intense for a good 3 months. Around 4 months, the jawpain came less often and was gone 5 months or so. Emotional effects kicked in once the physical pain began weaning about 5 weeks after surgery. It began as a very intense emotional roller coaster. Big ups and big downs, within moments of one another. As time passed, it was much more down than anything else, and I was deep in depression. It has been 6 months since my surgery. I have had a few simple partials (I think), but nothing more. I don't regret my decision to do the surgery. It wasn't easy to do, but it was the right thing for me to do. I wish you the best of luck, and hope that everything goes well for you! Take care :) Heather

Thanks mommy2kyra my surgeon said I would have to go home for approx 6 weeks to let my brain "rest" before they do the actual surgery, which means I have to go thru this twice! Another question (a vain one) was how much of your hair was removed. I was hoping to get away with only the area above my right ear, but with this test it seems that more spots will have to be removed. I know the new punk hairdo's are in but I'm no spring chicken and would look ridiculous. My daughter wouldn't be seen in public with me!
