Going for VEEG

Thu, 10/04/2007 - 14:35
Hello, I am new to this group. I am going for a VEEG in a week. I Have a few questions. I guess a little background would help. I am a 42 yo male who had a few episodes years ago while still in the service. I did not have them diagnosed since I did not want to be discharged from the army. Over the past 20 or so years I have had a few partial seizures but nothing regular. Starting this past spring they have returned and have escalated. They started with two (new terms now)tonic-clonic at one time. The next were twelve without regaining consciousness and then fifteen the last time. I was started on dialantin and that was increased and depakote was added to the mix. I did not react well to the depakote so they took me off that and placed me on topamax. Currently I am on 800mg of dilantin and 250mg of topamax. With that I still have had two more seizures. My neurologist moved me over to an epitologist thinking that perhaps it is not epilepsy but stress induced reactions. The epitoligist is not so sure. Will this VEEG be able to make the diagnosis easier? My doctor said that she is not sure that she wants to reduce the meds during the test since I have had recent events of what she calls status epileptics that can be fatal. If they do not reduce the meds, how can the test show anything? Also, from the observations that my wife described, the doctor thinks it may start in one part of my brain and then spread to the other parts as the seizure grows. I am confused as to the point of the test if they are not going to reduce the meds. Personally, I would prefer that it would be a stress issue and not true epilepsy because I would love to get off these meds. They make me feel like a zombie. Sorry for rambling. Thanks for the help
