EEG,MRI, and figuring out

Mon, 05/29/2006 - 13:37
I was supposed to have an EEG on Wednesday afternoon. Apparently there was a scheduling problem with the tech. So.... no, they didn't reschedule it for further away. It was changed to tomorrow afternoon, instead. That makes one less day for me to wait. :) My MRI has been scheduled for June 27, late at night. I am starting to feel better about getting things sorted out. I am afraid that I will leave, though, and be told that I am fine and that there is nothing wrong with me. I know something is wrong. Something has been wrong for a while. I am one step closer, though, to having it figured out. Any advice at this stage would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, mousie! Glad you're one step closer to the EEG. I guess I am just lucky in where I live (Twin Cities) and my health plan, because I didn't have to wait long at all. I had a Grand Mal on a Saturday, called the neurologist's office (which the ER had recommended) on Monday, saw the Neurodoc on Tuesday, had EEG wednesday, MRI Thursday. Then on Thursday afternoon, the NeuroDoc called to tell me there were epileptiform discharges, so he phoned in a prescription to Walgreens and we picked it up that night. So I didn't have any time to wonder and read and speculate. On the other hand, I didn't have time to read about TLE before I talked to my Neurodoc, or I'd have been prepared to tell him about all the "odd" things that were in retrospect partial seizures. That had to wait until my next visit, whereupon he promptly doubled my meds. Things are much better now. I'd like to have another EEG just to see if it's better now that I am on Keppra. I suppose it must be, since I have hardly had any partials since then. The only "deja vu" I had was just last Friday, and that evening I discovered that I had accidentally skipped my Keppra! Oops. Instant consequences, but not even that bad. I don;t think I've had ANY complex partials since starting Keppra. My advice on the EEG is to enjoy the procedure of having the tech style your hair with those beautiful electrodes, ask all your "curiosity" questions upfront, and relax. I actually fell asleep during my EEG, which they liked because they saw I didn;t have any sleep related changes. I am going to add my EEG results to my blog in case you'd like to see what your report might look like. The EEG is nifty because it's pretty objective, and while a normal EEG doesn't mean you don't have epilepsy, an abnormal EEG in the temporal lobe region is something like a 90% chance you have TLE. Good luck! --Jules

Thanks for the advice. Can I ask, how long did you have to wait for your results? My doctor's office suggested it could be several weeks for the report to come back..

I had my EEG on a wednesday and my MRI on the next day, and that very afternoon the neurologist called me at home with the results of both the MRI and EEG. My clinic has an epileptologist on staff who analyzed the EEG with my neurologist and they both signed the EEG report. (My clinic by the way is the Noran Neurological Clinic, at noranclinic.com) My impression is that the EEG can take longer to read than the MRI. I dunno. Probably depends on a lot of factors, but I doubt it will take several weeks! --Jules
