5 yr old-ambulatory EEG

Wed, 02/28/2007 - 16:57
My 5 yr. old son is going to be having an 24 hr. ambulatory EEG, hopefully within the month, to see if it is wise to take him off Tegretol. He's been seizure free for 2 years now so we'd like to try taking him off. I looked up what an ambulatory EEG is, so I am comfortable with that part. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice to help a little kid during all this. Any advice on how to keep him sitting still (short of putting him under! :) LOL1) while they try to get the electrodes on? Stuff like that! Thanks!

To put the wires on: Most likely he won't like it, but the staff is trained to do this on kids. Sometimes distraction works. Does he like music, or being read to? 10 min. after you leave the hospital, he'll forget how terrible it was getting it on. For the rest of the 23 hours... just try to distract him with favorite sedentary things. Movies, board games or memory games, crafts, and tv. He's still allowed to move around and be a boy, just not so much that he's bouncing around and removing his wires.
