On Keppra, Baby on the Way

Fri, 02/01/2008 - 19:06

Hi.  I am 23 years old and have been on 2000mg of Keppra a day for over three years.  I have also been seizure free ever since I started Keppra, and with no side effects.  I recently found out that I am pregnant with my first child.  I am ecstatic, but I can't help worrying about the unknown effects of Keppra on my baby.  My neuro is keeping me on the full dose for the duration of my pregnancy.  Other than taking extra good care of myself, does anyone have any advice?  Has anyone else gone through this that has a positive outcome?  A negative one?  I guess I am just searching for some sort of positive reinforcement to put my mind at ease a bit.  Thanks for reading.

Amy

i got the okay from my OB, ped, and neuro (just going to go ahead and plug MINCEP...they are amazing!!) while i was pregnant to BF before i even thought about it.  the manufacturer of keppra advises against it (probably because of lawsuit issues), but i have been told that the benefits outweigh the risks.  in my situation, it worked out best for me and my baby because she is perfectly healthy, but of course it is different for everybody!

I have to agree. I began taking Keppra when my son was a month old and the doctors said the benefits outweig the risks. They told me what to look out for but on the A-C Scale of what was safe and not they said it was one of the best meds to be on.

Hi, my name is Lyndsay and I've had epilepsy for almost three years. I currently take 1000/mg a day of Keppra and started taking the meds after my first son was born and have been seizure free since then. You have no idea how much your stories have eased my mind. My husband and I are discussing have another baby soon and I've paniced about what will happen to the baby during the pregnancy along with controlling my seizures.

I found out I had epilepsy after my son was born, sleep deprivation, and have yet to have another seizure since I began taking Keppra. I did breastfeed on Keppra with my son, but only for a few months because of worrying about the meds going into his system. Although the breastfeeding was fine, my biggest fear has been that of my next child and their health, but from all of your stories I feel like Keppra is the best medicine to be on and as many of you said, just control the things you can ie. sleep, eating right and exercising.

Thank you so much for all of your stories. Best of luck with all of your pregnancies.
