Can seizures be caused by birth control?

Fri, 02/22/2008 - 17:02

Now, I know some of you may think this is strange, but here goes:

I'm 21 and have had only 2 seizures in my life. One in April of last year and the other in August.  Both were after being on birth control (tri-cyclen lo, to be exact) for 3 months. I stopped taking my birth control after my seizure in April, but I didn't really think anything of it. I wasn't seeing anyone at the time so I just didn't really want it in my system. I started taking my birth control again in June after I met a new guy. After I had the seizure in August (late August) I started to think maybe it was caused by my birth control. The neurologist that was assigned to me said that it was entirely 100% impossible, but my family physician told me there was always a chance.

I have been completely off my birth control since that last seizure and have not been taking any medications either. I feel a lot healthier and I haven't had a single problem since then, but the neurologist still will not listen to my input about why I think this happened.

I sat down with one of my girl friends that also has epilepsy and told her what was going on. She told me that the same thing happened to her when she started taking the pill but that none of the neurologists here believed her. She went to a husband and wife team in Quebec (way far away) and they told her that it was entirely possible that it was her birth control that caused it.

Anyways, has this happened to anyone else?

Hi! I am 21 and I was taking

Hi! I am 21 and I was taking Belara pills for Polichistic Ovary Sindrom. After 2 months of taking them I had my first grand mal seizure. I had a normal tomography, a normal RMN but EEG showed some minor changes especially produced by the intermitent lights. My neurologist diagnosed me with epilepsy and put me on Keppra for 5 years. I asked if pills could produce that and she said no. She told me that I have a genetic epilepsy but nobody in my family has epilepsy and I think genetic epilepsies start in childhood, not at 21 years. I also haven't head traumatisms, febrile seizures, I didnt't consume alcohol, drugs or coffee. I didn't take Keppra and I also stop taking Belara. The seizure was one half month ago and it wouldn't repeat yet. What are you doing now? You are ok without meds or you still have seizures?

Maria, reading your post hits

Maria, reading your post hits close to home. So I had the Mirena IUD inserted 10 years ago when I was 20 years old after the birth of my daughter. Never had a seizure in my life. Always had a upside down unstable menstrual cycle. Never came monthly usually stay on about a day. After the Mirena I think I bled once, maybe twice. All's well. That's fine so fast forward 7 years I got my Mirena taken out. About two months after having it removed I had my first seizure, a grand mal seizure. Here we are three years later still battling seizures. I have always felt they have something to do with my hormones because it seems like right before my menstrual I get the "feeling" dizzy, tunnel vision, the aura. I got off my IUD to have a baby and he's here now. Took me over a year to get pregnant because of my irregular periods and my  my new EPILEPSY. My son is 7 months now and the seizures are still here. I'm reaching out to you because you might be right the Mirena might have regulated my hormones because they don't feel regular right now at all. I got my tubes tied after my son because 2 angles and now I'm wondering if I should request some hormones, some estrogen or progesteron. I hate the pills. Just went rogue and stop taking the pills (PLEASE DON'T DO THAT)  I ended up in the hospital. Between the awful side effects, mood swings, memory loss, anxiety... Just a natural estrogen pill would save me right now. ❤

This happened to me with the

This happened to me with the nexplanon implant. I had it in for a few months and then I started having seizures in the middle of my senior year of high school. Not too long after I got diagnosed with Epilepsy by my neurologist. My regular doctor told me it could be the birth control and I got it taken out immediately. Unfortunately for me I still continue to deal with the seizures any time I get stressed.
