Can I be cured of Epilepsy?

Thu, 03/25/2010 - 17:38

I have had Epilepsy my whole life, I am 29 and just now getting treated for it.  My grandmother had it too and was still on meds until she died in her 90s.  My doctor says its possible to become seizure free first with the meds and then ween off of them and be cured.  My grandma was never cured obviously.  And my doctor hasn't yet been able to stop my seizures (but that can take years and we've only tried for months) I still have them everyday, the worst ones several times a week. Just a few days ago I had 17 and on and on it was a two day marathon which prompted my doctor to throw in Keppra, he wants to go aggressive now with treatment he said because my seizures are getting so invasive.  My brain doesn't function well (if at all) which effects my marriage and my being the best mom I can be.  Anyone else feel it hurts their love life?  I would love to be cured of course but is it possible? Are any of you guys seizure free? Can you tell me how long it took, what you did, how it changed your life? What are the hardest to treat seizures?

Hi, Emma. I really enjoyed

Hi, Emma. I really enjoyed the honesty and detail of your post. I'm also 21 and had my first seizure at 17. They took me to hospital and released me the next day. They thought it could just be a one time occurrence. Then six months later, on Halloween, I was walking home with my best friend and had a seizure on the pavement next to the road. I was once again transferred to the hospital where they kept me in the ICU for further observations. I had had several more unexplained seizures in the few days I was there. Then they had given me a brain scan and I was told I had epilepsy. For a while they were roughly every 6 months and later 8 months, due to my medication. It was doing a good job, but eventually because of a traumatic experience I had with a very severe seizure, my mental health took a turn for the worse. I had basically become a cripal. Stuck in my home afraid of the outside world. I'm always anxious and always afraid. I'm trying to better myself but I still have the occasional break down. I had a small seizure last night, and I was only 30 days from the 1 year mark, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I just feel like there's a volcano in my head. Waiting to explode at any minute. I fear that last night was just a warning for something bigger to come within the next few days. I hope to overcome this silly fear of mine one day. I hope to be able to say, "I have epilepsy, epilepsy doesn't have me". I hope the same for you. I hope you and everyone else fighting this battle overcome their fears, their worries and their insecurities.-Alex

I have had epilepsy for 18

I have had epilepsy for 18 years and it’s so frustrating. It’s controlled and then it’s not.Right now it’s changing and giving me day seizures. I’m going to have to work with my doctor to stabilize it so I can get to work. I’m just completely apathetic with treatments and the changes and don’t even care if it takes me tonight. It’s completely disempowering and the way the police treated me was so disgusting when I got in an accident. I’m ubering and want it to be treated but I’m honestly ok if it takes me tomorrow.
