Weight Gain and Depakote

Sun, 02/06/2005 - 09:20

Okay so I went to see my neurologist yesterday and he told me some not so good things about my medicine.  Well lately I've been gaining weight..but I exercise everyday for 20 to sometimes even an hour a day and I lift weights.  I did the no carb thing but that was short lived but I still counted calories and all that and I havent lost any weight.

My neuro was like "ah you gained weight" and I'm like yeah thanks for reminding me.  He said it's because of the Depakote..I was pissed cuz I forgot about that side effect.  And he said I can never go off of the depakote b/c when I was just on lamictal I kept having seizures.  So I heard Topamax makes you lose weight instead of gain like on depakote.  I was wondering..if you have JME-can you take topamax instead of depakote???

I was on Depakote from 2nd grade to 8th grade. I have never been able to get the weight off and I am still struggling. I am now 340 lbs and age 41. I am frustrated and can't find a way without surgery to get the lbs off. My best friend was on it also and all of her kids have Autism. I don't know if this is a cause from being on Depakote or not but seems like everyone I talk to said that their kids are autistic and they were on the same meds. My aunt also has an autistic child. There has to be a way to get the weight off. Diet and exercise isn't helping either. I also developed touretts disorder but they don't know if this was an underlying condition that was brought to the surface from the meds or if it was caused by the meds. I just got new insurance so I may start going back to a neurologist.
