Sodium Valproate (Epilim/Depakene) Made My Hair Fall out!

Thu, 06/14/2007 - 19:20
Hi! I recently stopped taking Epilim (Sodium Valproate/Depakene) because it was making my hair fall out! :( Has anyone else had this side-effect from Sodium Valproate? Before, I was on Lamictin (Lamotrigine/Lamictal) and it made me SO exhausted that we had to change it to Epilim! :( Thanks and keep well! :)

How funny the doctor argued with me that Lamictal does not make you tired. It did my son too. He could sometimes sleep 20 out of 24 hours a day. That is scary as a parent to see your child so tired that he cannot function. And Depakote made him gain weight, (which he needed anyway). Kim

Hi Kim! Thanks very much for your response! :) That's hilarious because the package insert lists fatigue as a side-effect of Lamotrigine! Keep well! :)

I'm so relieved to hear from others who have had the same symptoms as me! I was put on Epilim approx 7 years ago, then was changed to Lamictal 2 years ago. As a teacher my life is stressful, so I blamed my hairloss on this. I lost so much hair, I spent a lot of money going to see trichologiosts and brought all kinds of lotions and potions - I didn't even consider that Lamictal could be the culprit!! I didn't get on with Lamictal and was changed back to Epilim last year but I haven't really noticed a difference with my hair and to be honest it now rules my life. I am going to hairdressers today at 2pm, but am dreading having to look in the mirror and watch the strands keep falling out, not to mention the thinning at the front! I am due to see the neuro next year but will now definitely mention that others have had the same experience as me - thank you so much. Is anyone taking a drug that doesn't interfere with hair! Look forward to hearing from you
