What is life like AFTER surgery?

Fri, 06/22/2012 - 11:34
I have an appointment in August to discuss "options" to control my seizures. I have been having seizures for 30 years. It wasn't until 4 years ago that it was discoved that my seizure activity was coming from the front left temporal lobe. I know that every case is different, and that with any surgery there are risk involved. I'm just curious to hear from people who have actually experienced the surgery what recovery is like, and what kind of quality of life some of you are having after the fact.

Hello Jim,

I realize this is an older post, but if you're still checking in here, I was wondering how your recovery has been since your last post?  I also have had simple partials over the last number of years and am considered a candidate for surgery.  The part I am most nervous about is the possible memory loss, word finding difficulties, and multi-tasking side effects.  All of these could be detrimental to my job if they turn out to be serious.

Did you experience any of these types of side affects?  If so, did they get better over time?

Thanks

I have had epilepsy since I was 12, I'm now 23, over the years I've tried 9 meds, none worked, so my neurologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital suggested surgery. To be honest I don't remember much about the surgery, I had grids in for 2 weeks, but was on pain killers so its all kind of a blur. I had the surgery in February and have been seizure free ever since! I'm still on 2 of the 3 meds I was on before, so I still have those side effects, but next month I'll be taken off another med and eventually off all meds. The recovery wasn't so bad, it took about a month to get back to normal. After being stuck in a bed for 2 weeks I remember I couldn't stand up in the shower, so if you do have the surgery try to do leg exercises while you are stuck in bed. I would say that was well worth it. Good luck!
