VNS - What do I watch out for??

Thu, 08/03/2006 - 11:42
My little boy (8 years old) will be having a VNS put in on Aug.22. I have been looking for information to tell me more about how it will affect him. He doesn't understand how to communicate hurt or pain, I have to watch him closly to figure out how he is feeling. Are there any side effects with the VNS that would cause him pain or harm if I don't catch them right away? Also, is there anything I should keep away from him? Microwaves? Metal detectors? other magnets? Thanks. CLC

CLC, My daughter has had a VNS for approximately 10 years. She is 36 years old but is mentally disabled and functioning at about 3 years. She, like your son, does not communicate feelings of pain or discomfort to us. We have not seen any problems with the VNS. The implantation surgery went very well and she has had the battery/generator replaced in 2001 with no problems. Dana has had uncontrolled seizures stemming from an allergic reaction to a DPT shot when she was 7 months old. Although the VNS has not lessened the frequency of her seizures, we have noticed that she seems to recover more quickly after seizures since the implant.
