Should I get surgery? What are the options?

Sun, 04/24/2011 - 21:55

I have had "E" for about 20 years and while the medication works to stop Tonic Clonic seizures none of the medication I have taken has done anything to stop the Simple Partial and Complex Partial ones I get about once a fortnight. I can't work drive and I'm cutting myself off from people cause things are really affecting my life. I want to go out without being afraid I'll get a seizure.

Problem is I have little money obviously and I don't know if I have to pay for it all. Australia has a good Public health care system but I don't know whether it extends to this and whether I should look into it. Any info would be good.

I can't comment on the economics of it all but I did have surgery at the age of 41 and have detailed my experiences here:

Hi Monkie.I have had 2 right temporal lobectomies.I started having seizures 2 yrs after first op.I tried more meds and 2 medication trials which didn't help.My neuro then advised me that a second op would be my next best option.I had the second temporal lobectomy in 2006.I have been seizure free since. My first op was at St Vincents Hospital in Melbourne. The second op was at Royal Melbourne Hospital.I did not have to pay anything for surgery. It was covered by Medicare. Please email me if would like more info. bertie3174@yahoo.com.au
