seizures after brain surgery

Sun, 03/09/2008 - 08:03
Hi....my wife had a brain tumor removed 7 years ago and since then has suffered from seizures.  She has had simple partial as well as at least one episode of Grand Mal seizures.  She takes Topomax and Keppra.  Most of the time she is fine but occassionally she has seizures in her facial muscles that are unseen by me or anyone else.  She says she can feel herself seizing.  Anyway, my questions is:  has anyone else experience seizures after a brain surgery and if so what is the prognosis for living seizure free?  Thanks

Hello all, as a young 30 year

Submitted by James Bailey on Fri, 2017-12-08 - 06:06
Hello all, as a young 30 year old man I was suffering with blackouts at work so I went to my local GP who prescribed me with strong pain killers (which didn't do any thing) as I was suffering severely with head aches at work. it wasn't until my girlfriend suggested I go get my eyes tested when I came to meet her on my lunch break when I was acting vague. After which they said there was an abnormity on my optic nerve. I went to my local hospital to have a brain scan when they found a tumour growing out of it. cutting a long story short  I had a meningioma removed on 17.08.2016 at Addenbrooke's Hosp, Cambridge, England. After learning to talk and walk again (5 days with a lot of help from my girlfriend not leaving my side) All seemed to be fine when I returned to work after 4 months I didn't have any seizures for 6 months. Then while at work (one a day before reapplying for my driving licence). I was put onto sodium valproate by the local neurologist starting off with 1000mg a day in 500mg tabs one in the morning and another in the evening. this seemed to be fine until I had another at work in august of this year. I got put up to 1200mg a day 500mg in the morning and 700mg at night I've not had another seizure since. I'm just waiting for another appointment with my neurologist in January to see what the next step is. so in regards to seizures after an operation on the brain there is a chance of them but it is curable so my suggestion is go for it although its your choice, hope my story helps your decision.all the best and good luck in whatever you choose to do James
