Recovering

Thu, 03/03/2011 - 15:00

Hi everybody,

I have had epilepsy since I was 15, never been able to control it so my neurologist sent me to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago Il where a team of amazing neurologists decided that after six different medications surgery would be better. So i did all the tests, the EEG hospital stays, the WADA test, the SISCOM test and then finally figured out that my seizures were coming from my right temporal lobe. I have grand mals, complex partial, and simple partial seizures, the grand mals were pretty well controlled but my other seizures I was having 6 or 7 times a week sometimes a day. Well now I am 25 and my husband and I would like to start a family so I do not want to be on Carbotrol and Keppra while trying to have kids, nor do we want me to be having all those seizures, so my family and I decided surgery would be best. So last month Feb. 3 I had a crainiotomy and they removed 3 in. of my brain. My neurologist already started to lower me off carbotrol.

I was wondering if anybody could tell me how long I am going to feel these rough headaches and the fatigue!?

Thank You

Staci

P.S. One month today and completely seizure free!!!

Hi Staci,

Congrats. I had the surgery (left temporal lobe) in '05 and have been sz-free since.   Welcome to the club.

My headaches lasted at least a month.  I had never been big on pain killers, but I took a lot of them during this time.  Fatigue went on and off.  I started doing things within a month, but for a short period of time.  I'd say it was about 3 months before I wasn't exhausted at some point of the day.  It was a gradual return of energy.  My memory continues to get better as I have now been 100% med-free for one year.

Good luck on the recovery and congrats on becoming sz-free.

Wow, thank you for responding! I had a right temporal lobectomy. It is a comfort to know that you are totally off your meds. I hope to one day be off my meds to. Unfortunatly for my children they have a risk off having epilepsy because its genetic for me. My Grandmother, then my father had it and now me. The one comfort I take in all this is that I have had some amazing doctors and technology is very advanced now. My energy seems to drain pretty fast, I can't wait until I have my full energy back. My headaches seem to be easing up to, when I have one i'm trying to fight it with tylenol. One more question for you, did you ever have any issues with your arms and legs crawling in the middle of the night?

                            Thanks
