Post Operative: Left Temporal Lobectomy

Fri, 03/03/2006 - 07:28
My boyfriend had a left temporal lobectomy two weeks ago. He's recovering nicely, however, he's having significant problems with short term memory and "tip of the tongue" phenomenon. However, his doctors told him that would happen. Nonetheless, he is *very* frustrated that he can't remember new things. He just returned to work two days ago, and the frustration is constant. Are there any tools or natural remedies that will help him improve his short-term memory? I know this is a very difficult thing for him, and I'd like to be able to help him any way that I can.

I hope this finds your boyfriend recovering nicely. I was reading this and thought, if he's still having trouble with the memory, there is a wonderful tool you could get him. It's a palm pilot or pda whatever you want to call it. I joke to others that mine is like my second brain, but I'm also being serious. I use that thing for everything. Just something to think about. Take care, Ladybug

I had a left temporal lobectomy 3 years ago. I was in the hospital for about 2 weeks afterwards and then got out once i was to the point i could walk with a cane. I have been able to get memory back over time, but had 3 months of therapy and still, people i have known for about 15 years, i can't tell you the names. I am now walking a couple miles a day. In my situation they said they were unable to remove all the dead brain tissue caused by lack of Oxygen from my Grand mals. In the past i had 2 brain surgeries before the age of 3 years, yet i managed to make it through grad school and have worked 19 years for the federal government. The pretests for the surgery had shown the right hemisphere of the brain only functioned at 10% and they did the lobectomy on the left side. I often can't remember the right words to use, etc. I think it has helped that i do crosswords, and still work. For my job with the Winema National Forest i spend much of my time in front of a computer, but as an Ecologist also i am often out in the woods. I have continued to have seizures most days and 2 weeks ago they installed a VNS ( Vagus Nerve Stimulator ) as the "final option" to control my seizures. It is to be turned on tommorow morning.
