Simple Partial Seizures & Long-term memory

Mon, 07/07/2008 - 05:26

Hi, I am new to this forum.

I suffer from what are suspected to be Simple Partial Seizures. They are currently under investigation, and having had an MRI and EEG with nothing abnormal showing, the doctor is starting to suspect epilepsy, although nothing has been diagnosed as yet. I have always thought since they started that these simple partial seizures are just a minor inconvenience which I can live with, and as such I probably wouldn't want medication in case the side effects were worse than the actual seizures.

However recently I've started wondering if these seizures are cumulatively damaging my long-term memory. Sometimes my wife talks of things we've done, places we've been, and it's worrying that, for some things, I have no memory of them at all.

If this is the case then of course I'd want to take medication in the assumption that controlling the seizures might prevent further memory loss.

Does anyone know of a link between seizures (I believe they are temporal lobe based) and long-term memory loss? Or maybe I've just always had a lousy memory anyway?

Hiya my name is sophia, i've been a member here for just over a year, i suffer from over 10 different types of simple partials and 3 or more different types of complex seizures, grad-mal, myoclonics, and suspected absence seizures too. I have three different types of Epilepsy too :(.

As i'm talking to you i'm having a SP SZS, as i'm seeing things that are not there. lol OO PRETTY COLOURS!!! And wot not, lol.

My memory is ok ish, its getting worse as time goes by. i'm 18 i got dianosed at the age of 17, march the 7th this year. I also have Dyslexia,Dyscalular,Dyspracia, Aspergers Syndrome-(A.S) and A.D.H.D. My A.S consultant didn't think about the possability of Epilepsy, i don't think it even crossed his mind.

All the doctors were consentrating on all my other problems and what would have been a really mild case of Epilepsy when i was a child, its now got really bad because non of the other doctors pick it up, i think what i'm trying to say is if you leave it untreated it will just get worse and you will start having more of these a day. Back to what you was saying about the med's and the side effects and its not really worth it, well there is AED'S out there that don't have many side effects i'm on 350mg of lamictal and i'm only having one to three a day and before i was on it, i was having over 35 szs plus (that i know of. lol.) I don't really have any side effects now.

At first you do and when they up your med's too but then they go away. My eeg and MRI was normal but because my seizures were so out of control i was having seizure/s about 15 minutes before i went to see my neuro for the first time and he saw the after effects of it and then i had another one. He started me on med's straight away not all of neuro's do that. Infact i don't think it is a done thing in the medical world lol, but i am soo glad he did my friends said it took them upto a year or more to get diagnosed and put on med's so i'm very glad my neuro did it.

Anyway if you have any more qessy and that please just add me as a friend or email me.

All the best, soph xxxx

Our neuro says that untreated sz DO cause more damage, which is why most E becomes worse over time. The more you have, the more scaring is done, which causes more damage. Vicious cycle. My daughters memory is bad. She has limited memories of family vacations or events. She struggled in school terribly. (undiagnosed E) She has to write things down. She had left temp lobe surgery in March 08. Her memory is actually a little better now. She still struggles though. I never knew memory loss was associated with E until we started reading this website. It's been a huge relief to find that she is not the only one who struggles. I hope this helps?

HI,I'm Steve,

I have been living with Partial Complex sezures now for the last 5 years. All though my memory loss is more short term,I have some long term also.Like other people here have said,it will affect your memory.I have Right Temperal  Lobe sezures that start in the area that controls my left arm and hand, and the meds i'm on right now keep them controled very well.

You can't let it get you down. When someone points something out that I did,I just laugh and say it will catch up to you some day to.

just remeber, things could always worse!!!!
