my 5 yr. old son

Tue, 05/16/2006 - 23:40
I have so many questions and I really don't know where to begin. My 5 yr. old son (who has always been very healthy) had a seizure today at daycare. They said he was sleeping and started shaking really hard. At first they thought he was having a dream or something so they tried to wake him up, but his eyes were rolled in the back of his head and he just kept convulsing for what they said seemed like 5-6 mins. They called 911 and when the ambulance got there, they tried to get him to stand up and walk and he couldn't move. They stood him and he started convulsing again. He had no fever and no type of infection was detected. The doctor did a CT and blood tests but everything came back normal. He is scheduled for a sleep deprived eeg on friday. I am just so scared because I have never had to deal with anything like this and what if there are not any answers. I am scared to let him sleep by himself... I just don't know what to do. Last night he came and woke me up about 3 a.m. and told me that he had a dream and he couldnt remember anything. He told me that he was really tired and his head really hurt. I am now wondering if he had one last night and we didn't even know.

Thank you very much for the insight... it was very helpful, and I will take your advice and look for the book. Tomorrow he is going to have a sleep deprived EEG, so I really hope we find out something next week some time. His doctor said that he is going to send us to a neurologist in Lubbock, I don't really know much about him... but he said that he is the only one he likes to use and that is who reads the EEG's. I don't know how I am going to handle this, everything he does freaks me out. He has been so spastic since the other day, like spilling things and droping things and falling out of his chair... I don't know. Last night my boys were in the bath and I was bathing my baby (16 months) and Kelton (my 5 yr. old) started banging his hands on the side of the bath tube and he wouldn't stop for about a min and I kept calling his name and asking him what was he doing and finally he turned around and smiled at me and said he didn't know what he was doing. I don't know if that was one or what, it just scares me cause I have no knowledge about this besides what I have read. I also have been reading that there are different behavior signs before and after one has a seizure. Has anyone experienced this?? For some reason this last weekend (before his seizure) he was so good, did everything he was told. He was quiet and still all weekend, went to bed when he was told and now he is out of control... it just makes me wonder. I have been reading other stories and freaking myself out too, I read something and think to myself, hmmm... he has been doing this and I just haven't even noticed anything was wrong. I just figured that he was being an annoying little boy. Like smaking his lips for a min straight without answering me. I dont know I think I just need to wait and see what the doctor says, hopefully I will find out something. I just feel so bad that he could have been having a problem and I never even saw the signs. It just breaks my heart to see him have to go through all of this.

Good luck with the EEG. Try not to let his behavior freak you out. Who knows with a five year old boy-- sometimes they put their movements/actions before their thoughts and that may be why he is doing the stuff you described. Maybe now that you are so tuned in to his every move, you may be noticing things or thinking about things that were already there. As to the bath incident, maybe he realizes you are a bit nervous (understandably) and is playing into it a little. I know how hard it is not to have information. I walked around like a zombie the first 3 to 4 weeks. It gets better with information and you will feel more in control whatever the results are. If I was you, I would stop reading all the other stories until you have more information from your doctor. That way, once you have more info. then you can read stuff that actually applies to the type of epilepsy your son may have. Still get the book I mentioned because it will help you understand seizures. As to not seeing the signs, you can't kick yourself for that. You are not a doctor (I think) and sometimes it takes a more dramatic event to figure out something is going wrong.
