Keppra and depression

Wed, 06/10/2009 - 15:08

This topic may already be addressed on this site. If it is, I apologize.  I'm new to epilepsy.com, and have a quick question regarding keppra and antidepressants.

I'm a 23 year old female and have been medicated for epilepsy for about 5 years.  I've been taking keppra for about 2 1/2 years and it has worked wonders for me.  I suffered from nocturnal grand mal seizures and have only had 2 since I began taking keppra.  Since taking keppra I have felt emotionally stunted. Life is bland, and I have no motivation to do or accomplish much of anything.  The longer I'm on the drug, the more I realize that I'm truly missing out on being my "old" self.  I don't want to stop taking keppra because it really has controlled my seizures.  I talked to my neuro about the depression and she offered to refer me to someone for depression/medication/etc. I'm wondering if anyone who takes keppra is also on an antidepressant?  Which one? Has it helped? Etc.  Thanks so much.

Im a 19 year old female. Diagnosed with partial seizures, and epilepsy at age 12. Was taking Keppra XR 1500 2x a day. I had a seizure (severe eye twitching) in college last year and my neurologist raised my dosage by another 500mg in the evening. Though my seizures came from a traumatic brain injury from the flu and strept. virus and have been dealing with mental health issues since its only been recently that I've really been feeling not myself, depressed if you will. Is it the high dosage of keppra xr?( I have major scarring in my brain from the brain surgery, after getting so sick, that causes the neurons to fire too rapidly and not go anywhere-causing the seizures, but not grand Mal anymore, just eye twitches that can still be functional with.)

I'm so sorry, Dej.  I know

I'm so sorry, Dej.  I know exactly what you are going through.  My husband has been on Keppra for the last 3-4 yrs. and the mood swings, depression, anxiety, irritability, apathy is horrendous.  He actually just moved out and left my two kids and I because he's "unhappy".  I've tried to talk to him about the keepra so many times but he doesn't see it...... and to make matters worse, he hasn't seen his neuro in 3 yrs. but the Neuro keeps giving him refills...UGH.  We are starting divorce proceedings next week
