Does anyone go into a "mission"?

Fri, 05/12/2006 - 02:56
Sometimes when I am finished with the physical seizure, I go into what my husband refers to as a "mission". While I was working, I would go from my desk, get on an elevator and find myself outside not knowing how I got there. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Renae, while I was taking Depo Provera (an injection birth control that lasts for at least three months) after we were married, I continued to take Tegretol. This worked fine until I decided to come off the Depo Provera, and changed to Implanon instead (an implant that can be taken out whenevery you want to stop). I had a seizure after none for six years. This seemed to be more than coincedance to me ('coincidence' was the medical opinion). I went back to the Depo Provera, then sacked my docter and got another one (female - I think she relates more than my other male doctors). She started me on Lamictal, it takes quite a while to change over to, but after I had been on it for a while, she took me off Depo Provera ( you can't have kids while on contraceptive even though it's helping the epilepsy!)to see if the Lamictal would control sz's on it's own ( bear in mind the Tegretol only 'helped' while I was also on Depo). It does! (Wow!) so you are right - the hormones definately have a link, but do more research, and find out more before you have the chop! Let's know how you go! xxSoph

HI everyone! Good observations! Hormones, epilepsy, seizure meds, birth control - all can be related. Hormone issues can affect seizures with hormonal problems affecting seizure control in some women - usually it's an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone which can happen for a variety of reasons. Estrogen can aggravate or make seizures more likely to occur, progesterone can have an antiseizure effect. Some seizure meds may interfere wtih birth control, while birth control can affect level of some of the AEDs.. If anyone notices problems in these areas, do some research and ask doctor for evaluation on hormonal issues. There are epileptologists who specialize in endocrine or hormonal issues for women. Here's a few links to info to get you started. www.epilepsy.com/info/women_young.html professionals.epilepsy.com/page/hormones.html www.epilepsyfoundation.org/programs/wei/index.cfm Best wishes, Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist
