Advice please

My 8 year old daughter has been diagnosed with temporal lobe disorder. She had 2 strokes in 2004, 4 days apart, and one again last week. Initially we took her for tests and the conclusion was that it was heat exhaustion. After having another last week we took her for further tests MRI, EEG, blood, etc., and found that she has temporal lobe disorder. My husband wants her on the drugs immediately while I am a bit sceptical about whether to medicate her. Anybody with sound advice please. My thoughts on medication is that it would be perfectly reasonable to put her on the drugs if they were risk-free. Help ...

Ladybird, Just thinking...did your daughter have 2 strokes and as a result of seizures? Or did her seizures somehow cause a stroke to happen? If it was the strokes which caused her to have seizures, shouldn't the doctors find out why she had the strokes? I mean, because if they don't find out why she suffered a stroke, maybe she God forbid could have another one.Or the other way, if she has seizures which cut off oxygen to her brain and ended up giving her a stroke, you should obviously try prevent anymore seizures. Either way, stabilizing her would seem the best thing for her, prevent any further insult to her brain.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your advice and good wishes. Sorry to alarm anyone as I originally stated that my daughter had 2 strokes instead of 2 seizures. I'm not thinking straight at the moment. I have taken all your advice onboard and doing further research. I also spoke to the neurologist again who has given me new hope on the medication side of things.

I am glad you spoke to the neuro again. Sometimes as parents we have to choose between the lesser of two "evils". While I don't like unnecessary medications for anyone, I think with a history of more than one seizure you have to look at what the effects of not being on meds would be in the long term and that can be scary, there is also the impact that it could have socially and educationally for her. The majority of dr's do not just throw drugs at kids unless they are needed and it is important to trust any dr that is treating your child. Never be scared to ask more questions and ALWAYS take a list of concerns to any appt's (as well as a list of any positives) It helps them to make more informed choices as to what is best. Always ask why they are recommending a particular course of treatment, is there any alternatives, why does he think "a" is better than "b" etc. It helps to feel more confident and more informed.
