6 year old started on Trileptal Today - All advice welcomed

My six year old daughter was stared on Trileptal today. She has had 3 seizures (June 2005/Jan 2006/May 2006). Each of her seizures have occurred during her sleep, starting about 11:00 PM. She will wake up, begin to cough and then vomit several times. Once the vomiting is complete, she has a absence stare that continues for more than 30 minutes. Each time we have rushed to the emergency for assistance, becasuse the absence stare lasted so long. Has anyone out there seen anything like this before. Any feedback on any similar situations would be greatly appreciated. She was a little drowsy today, as expected with her being on the drug for the first day. I'm so concerned about school and will she be drowsy in class after taking her morning dosage.

Hi Angmel- What you and colelu are describing is what my daugther has been diagnosed with. It is called Benign Occipital Childhood Epilepsy. A lot of neurologists seem to miss this diagnosis. Type it in the search to the left and you will hopefully find some threads between Colelu and myself where I was informing colelu of the condition. If if does not come up, try typing in Panayiotopolous syndrome. If you want to chat about this, add me to your buddy list and we can set up a time. The good news is that this diagnosis has a very good prognosis because the kids with BOCE are expected to outgrow it within a few years.

Thanks for your reply. I have had a look and her seizures do sound alot like BOCE - the sleep, the viomiting and the facial twitches. My husband and I have written a letter to her Docotr along with some reports about BOCE so that she can have a look before we meet with her in a couple of weeks. She has been on Tegretol for a week now and so far no side effects! Angela

Based on the research I have done I thought it was Panayiotopoulos syndrome. I'm currently searching for a new doctor, not really happy with the one I have. My daughter had another seizure in Dec 2006, making it her 4th since June 2005 and after being on MEDS for 7 months. I'm just not sure if the MEDS are the answer.
