Topomax and Weight Loss

Wed, 02/02/2005 - 21:24
I am quite worried at this point. We moved to Nevada about 6 months ago. My wife has been trying to get into a neurologist for 2 1/2 to 3 months. She has been diagnosed with JME since 1996 (took 3 years to diagnose, previous doctors didnt believe us). The neuro center our PCP has referred us to wont accept her as a patient until they get her records from Boulder, CO. This is the only neurologist our PCP trusts in this area. We have had difficulty in getting this done and have been trying extremely hard.My wife eats normally as she always has, but still continues to lose weight. Currently she takes Dilantin and Topomax for Seizures, Inderol for benign tremors, Synthroid, Prozac for the depression caused by dilantin. She has been on the topomax for about a 1 1/2 years. Since moving to Nevada, she has gone from 195lbs to less than 140lbs. The 8 months on the topomax while in Colorado, she lost 15-20 lbs. I am extremely worried at this point. The neuro's at this center wont even talk to her about it. Our neuro in boulder is no longer covered on our plan, but is trying to expedite the records dept for the transfer of records. At this point, my wife wants to cut her dose in half or even wean herself off the topomax. Does anyone have any advice on what we can do? Similar problems?

I have been on  a low dose of Topamax for approximately 2 years and it has not affected my weight loss that much. However, my neuro did tell me to watch for drastic weight loss as it has been known in studies to make some people loose too much weight. If your wife seems to be having problems with energy or not eating, (sometimes topamax takes my appetite away), try vitamins with iron. Iron makes you hungry and will make you eat.

Hope things get better for you soon.

I seem to be losing weight quickly, but I was starting to diet before I started Topomax in April. It was weird, for a day it was as if I could not taste food. I do have a loss of appetite. I do drink a lot of soy milk crstal lite and eat low fat mozarella chesse. I guess I don't eat much. I had a couple of days with word salad (as we call it in the Alzheimer unit I work in). I have hallucinated. I thought that I had lizards runing over me. Could be the "Dopomax" or any of the other meds I take. (However I find this unlikely since I've been taking the other meds for 24yrs w/o problems. Dilatin made me hallucinate when I took it when I was little.) Sounds like I should take vitamins as well. BTW, I adore my neurologist. He is the only one that actually listens to me when I say something's not working or is wrong. My other one would never listen to me.

hi all,

Dangermouse here, new to the site.Recently started taking Topopax for siezures, gradually increasing my dose...so far taking 200 mg. tomorrow start 300 mg. A little concerned about the weight loss stories....so far only lost 5 pounds.Wondering how long before this usually happen's...does it "alway's? do you lose weight even if you don't lose your appetite? (so far I am making myself eat, even though I may not really feel "very hungry")I usually love to eat !!! so I am pretty determined to not give up on food ..haha!!I've been on the med three weeks.

Just really wondering if this is an appetite suppresant and that is why people are losing weight or if I eat as I usually would can I expect to still lose weight...?? because smehow it changes the body's metabolism?? so I have to eat more???

love to hear any thought's.
