Topamax Dosage Survey!!!

Tue, 06/27/2006 - 17:37
Hello! I'm just curious for anyone who's on this wonderful medication of Topamax what their dosage is and when their neuro has them taken it. Reading some of your posts I already see all various responses. Personally my neuro has me on 150mg of 75 in the morning and 75 at night. (which I know probably seems low to a lot of you)... But I find that I wake up feeling fine in the morning and as soon as I take the meds I'm groggy, tired, and drained all day. I want to call my neuro and ask if I can take more or all at night and less in the morning so I can have a more productive day. For long term use, I would like to be on the lowest dosage possible. I've been seizure free thankfully for almost five months so I know the meds are working, I just wish I could function better so I could return to the working world. Thanks for your responses!!!

Hey Allison, I have worked

Hey Allison, I have worked up to 300 mg of Topamax over the past 3 months. (100 morning, 200 at night which I can adjust with 50mgs at a time if concentration becomes an issue). I originally began treatment to manage migraine headaches (which are doing a bit better, but I'll probably be worked up to 400 mg soon), but during all my MRIs and EEGs found out I was actually having small seizures and that topamax could control that too...added bonus. I'm pretty happy with topamax, although about 2 of the past 3 months have been spent getting used to it, and my body is still adjusting. My headaches are better and i've been able to detox off alot of really heavy painkillers. I lost 20 pounds in 2 months which is fine by me, but i am down to 110 now and getting tired of people asking me if i'm eating enough. I've had problems with concentration, mixing up words, simple organization, etc. I go to the wrong classrooms, blank out on professors names, work on a paper for 10 hours and forget to turn it in. However, I've learned to over-plan and over-manage things and I've found that it just takes being really smart to be on stupi-max most days. My brother is in a similar situation - lost 22 pounds in 2 weeks, sleeps all day. His neuro has put him on Paxil (anti-depressant) simply to gain weight. However, like me, he used to spend hours in bed in a dark room 6 days a week in pain, and pretty much any side effect is worth relief from that. Topamax has my vote.

I am currently in the process of switching from 750 mg of Depakote ER each to 100 mg of Topomax each day. With 750 mg of Depakote ER, I was seizure free for about 7-8 years. I am switching because my husband and I want start a family. So far, the 100 mg of Topomax each day (50 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night) is okay for me. I haven't had any problems so far. In a week, I am going to have an EEG done and some blood to see if the dosage should be increased. I have had epilepsy since I was 12 years old and I am now 25 years old. I have had 3 grand mal seizures and if I forget to take my meds I tend to get petit mal seizures.

SO SHE SWICHED ME TO TOPMAX. WELL I DID NOT AGREE WITH THAT MEDICANE. I WAS FALLING  AND MY SEIZURES GOT WORSE. EVERYONE ELSE SAIDS IT IS A REALLY GOOD DRUG I JUST COULD NOT TAKE IT......
