new diagnosis- Trileptal Side Affects

Thu, 03/16/2017 - 16:29
7 y/o just diagnosed with focal epilepsy and complex partial seizures. Neurologist wants to put her on Trileptal. Wondering what your experience is with side affects of this drug. I read that some people experience dizziness and lack of balance-this would be challenging as we already deal with some of this.

if they showed up easily on

if they showed up easily on EEG, then they'll probably schedule a follow up EEG after her meds are at a certain level. initially our child had simple partials that she could tell us about but periodically had complex partials that she didn't realize happened, sometimes we could figure out those happened, either by the prolonged staring or messed up memory. they only got few seizure related discharges on EEG. later on her seizures changed so a second EEG is what they did to check if meds were effective (atypical absences and myoclonics).our daughter did not like blood tests (or shots, or IVs - surgeries are ok since they put IVs after one is out). she started oxcarbazepine when she was 6. on the plus side is boxed mac n cheese, potato chips or other favorite salty foods were relatively unrestricted (because she didn't eat much of those foods and extra salt was good for her). sodium levels can get low for people on oxcarbazepine and it's not a problem if it happens over a long time, sudden changes are dangerous. I think more people freak out about rash possibilities with epilepsy meds. but when the drugs work with minor side effects, quality of life is better. seizures can impact school and so many other things.

With most people the side

With most people the side effects go away after the body gets used to the medication and the therapeutic levels are in the body. For many people it is hard to know when they started having seizures because most people do not know what most seizures look like. Day dreaming? weird feeling in one part of the body. There are many different types of seizures.Any and all seizure medications have their side effects. The one that you asked about did a good job when I took it. It takes 4-6 weeks for the body to get used to the medication while it builds in the body. The therapeutic levels are there to stop break thru seizures if the medication is taken late or even missed. In order to help your child let all th doctors know any and all medications that they take. That includes over the counter medications too. The reason for that is one medication can counter another. A over the counter med can have a side effect that triggers seizures in seizure prone people
