ibuprofen as a seizure trigger?

Sun, 07/25/2010 - 22:45

Hello!

I have recently switched over to Tegretol controlled release meds after I found Tegretol normal was not preventing complex partial seizures (a mild kind of seizure but still v scary!)

The Tegretol CR meds seemed to be working incredibly well and I was feeling v in control. Hurrah!

However, the other day though I took some Nurofen (ibuprofen) for some period pain (I hardly ever take Nurofen but couldn't find my normal medication). A few hours later, I experienced another cp seizure which resulted in me muddling up my medication for the day. This resulted in two more cp seizures the next day.

My question to the My Epilepsy community is: has anyone else experienced seizures after taking ibuprofen?? Is ibuprofen a seizure trigger?? The internet couldn't tell me much about this and a pharmacist I asked said ibuprofen was usually safe for epileptics.

But it would be wonderful to know there was a real 'reason' behind these recent seizures and that they weren't just happening horridly randomly, particularly after feeling so great on Tegretol CR and FINALLY being able to drive again!!

Any thoughts people??

Thanks in advance

Hi doc ... I read the story

Hi doc ... I read the story that you experienced with your patient whom you believed overdosed on ibuprofen, but I am curious if it's possible ibuprofen can also be used for the exact opposite; i.e. I had searched for the opposite of this question (ibuprofen as a seizure trigger?)  when I found this page... I was asking can IBUPROFEN STOP A SEIZURE from occurring. My experience, First: I'm not sure if it's a warning sign a seizure is coming, if it's a simple seizure in progress, OR if it's migraine related ... But I have been congested in my sinuses and ringing in my ears for almost a full month... and this past 2 weeks, I have been getting VERY frequent visual auras (the ones that look like a geometric pattern in black and white or very rainbow colored squiggly lines)... As soon as I see the aura starting, I take 600-800 mg of ibuprofen and the auras stop and then it's usually followed up by a dull headache for a few hours. The reason I was originally searching the question I wanted info on... was because I am trying to convince my doctor that I don't need to be on the anti-seizure meds anymore and that my auras are migraine associated and not a warning for an approaching seizure.   Any thoughts on either of these topics would be grateful ?

Following a heart attack in Nov 2007 I was placed on the following medications Metorolol 50 mg 2 x dy, Ramipril 10 mg 1 x dy, clopidogrel75 mg 1 x dy, Atorvastatin 40 mg 1 x dy, Asprin 81 mg 1 x dy, Tylenol 650 mg 2x dy as needed for pain following Back surgery Nov 2007.  In March-April 2015 I changed from Tylenol 650 mg to Ibuprofen 200 mg as neededfor back pain to replace Tylenol. On May 20, 2015 my reported that I had a seizure in my sleep. On June 17, 2015 I had a seizure in the morning. At that point I did some research on line to determine if any of the drugs I was taking would interact to result in a seizure.  The result reported that there was a slight chancethat when Ibuprofen was added to the mix of medications, I was taking there was a chancethat it was a cause for an increase in seizure occurances. At that point I stopped the Ibuprofen and returned Tylenol. On August 19, 2015 I had another seizure.During July and August I had a complete physical, complete cardiac evaluation, and a neurologic evaluation.  All of these evaluations could not find a causal relationship to those seizures.since  I have not had another seizure then.  Current date 12-December 20018.

I am starting to think my complex partials can be triggered by Ibuprofen. My seizures aren’t totally controlled by my meds, but they are getting better. However, I’ve taken over the counter Ibuprofen 3 times recently for headaches and had a seizure closely afterwards.
