Can medicine affect a relationship

Wed, 02/22/2006 - 19:33
I understand meds can cause moodiness and tension and all that, can they make you fall outta love? My bf of a 1 yr 1/2 just moved out. He says I don't feel the same because of Keppra he said it changed everything. Can a medicine really affect such a strong emotion like love?

Megan, Keppra made me very "short fused" - I was edgy & miserable. I could feel that I was always on the verge of a melt-down. I wasn't on it very long, but during the time that I was I lacked the motivation to put forth much effort in my relationship. Luckily, I've been married a gazillion years so my husband is used to my swings & sways with different medications. I wish you well - I know that it stinks! Know that you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. - - Christine

My boyfriend has been on depakote, keppra and now lamictal. We have been together almost 3 yrs and it has been nothing but a emotional rollercoaster for us. Now that hes on 900 mg of lamictal daily he has walked out 2x on me and says hes confused all the time or cant get close to me which is decreased desire libido from meds...now we are still together but he is isolating himself and moved back home to clear his head not realizing that the high dosage of meds is making him feel so confused..if you cant accept your illness and get meds adjusted relationships will be ruined. I am giving him his space to clear his head but have been so supportive and he needs to realize that his high dosage is making him feel like this and if he just got them adjusted or changed to a new medicine he could actually live a happier life and be happy with me.. =( ...of course i am waiting patiently for him and not giving up!! as much as it hurts!!!

Hi Megan I know exactly how your feeling right now as I am in the same situation. I think that my keppra has ruined my relationship with my ex-boyfriend of 3 1/2 years. We split up 3 months ago when I felt I just needed some space at the time. I went to see my Epilepsy Nurse and only last week I have started to switch to Topamax. I did try and explain about the side effect of keppra to my ex-boyfriend because we were still friends at the time, but he wouldn't understand so now I have lost a friend and a boyfriend due to keppra. I just hope for you that your ex-boyfriend will be more understanding than mine was when you try and explain this to him. Good Luck! Teri
