Is anyone NOT medicating for Absence Seizures?

Wed, 02/03/2010 - 14:14

HI - our daughter was diagnosed over the summer with Absence Seizures. Her pediatric neurologist has recommended starting her on Ethosuximide. She has assured us that the side effects are primarily "upset stomach" and that can remedied by taking the medication with food.

We are new to all of this and quite overwhelmed. Currently, these seizures are not interferring with her school work, behavior, or social activities. Since it is most likely that she will "out-grow" them we are reluctant to start medication.

Is there anyone "out there" who has never medicated OR started the medication and then stopped it b/c of the side effects?

We don't want to make the wrong decision. Thank you for any insight.

my daughter was diagnosed aged 3 (she is now 4.5) we are not medicating at the moment because we are concerned about the side effects. She is curemtly doing well and not falling behind with her development.  We are really not sure what to do for thes best - our doctor was really supportive of not medicating - but she has gone on maternity leave - we saw a new doctor last week who was very pushy regarding the medicine and said most people just do as she suggests!  Really not sure what to do at the moment.

Ethosuximide was given to my daughter 9yrs old. Started with 2 a day, 4 a day then 4 was too much, so went to 3 a day...side effects upset stomach , behavior issues (none before this) decreased appetite, digging her nails into her skin and scratching herseld when frustrated...after 3 months on that dose, I request  an EEG/sleep study to see if there are seizures. I was told to give her another pill so now 4 a day a week later was the test, the doc said still seizures give her another pill so 5 a day...discharge papers and nurse called to follow up and told me in 4 days increase meds to 6 a day....well that caused her to end up in the hospital with 2 weeks before decreased appetite and 8 days no food or fluids diagnosis avoidant restrictive intake food disorder...they changed her ethosuximide weaned off to depakote sprinkles. 8 pills a day from the jump!!!!!!! In hospital for 4 weeks and only on for 5 days and they saw no seizures. LOL really when the doc told me it takes 30 days for depakote to get in the body and work. All I know is when your gut isn't healthy your mind isn't healthy. She had SIBO small intestinal bacterial overgrowth which she need antibiotics for that my ex husband didn't give her while they were on vacation so now this....hmmm makes one wonder...believe in the power of food to damage the body or heal the body.
