My daughter just starting having seizures

Sat, 01/20/2007 - 11:33
My daughter will be 2 1/2 next month and has had two seizures-that we know of. She had her first one in sept and they did a EEG and it was normal. We were told there was a good chance she would'nt have anothone but she did on christmas Eve. She had a EEG and MRI and they both were normal. We don't see the neurologist untill feb 12th so I'm still not sure If she has epilepsy. They started her on Topomax but she had horriabe side effects with that and now she is on Triliptal and she seems fine. She has had two weird episodes where it looks like she is seeing something and has become frightened. She told me to look up the otherday and was staring st the ceiling. I was told it could be a aura but does that mean that her brain is still producing seizure activity? When she had both seizures she called out to me in a paniced voice and seemed out of it and then would fall into me and her eyes would shake back and fourt and roll a little and her head would bob. Does this sound like a simple partial seizure? This is all so new and I am tying to understand all I can to help my daughter.

I started another topic about glucose test to rule out diabeties(sp?) but I am being to it is unlikely. Do you have any stories related to diet? I plan on asking about the B6 when I see the neuro.

Hi Lilansmom, I do not have stories that I know of personally that relate to diet. There is a woman on here that started having seizures in her mid 30s and changed the way she ate and started taking supplements. I have emailed her to learn more, as she claims that her supplements and diet stopped the seizures. As far as diabetes goes your daughter probably had a blood test the first time she was admitted after having seizures. This initial blood test will have been tested for diabetes, but ask to make sure. It is my understanding that they also test for calcium and magnesium levels, along with other things. The urine test and blood test should rule out or in diabetes. If those tests come back clean there is a known diet for epileptics called the ketogenic diet. This needs to be started with your doctor and nutritionist as it is very strict and everything needs to be monitored very closely as your body is put in a state of ketosis. My understanding is it is best for certain types of seizures, parents usually consider it after they have tried a few different meds with no results. If your child is a fussy eater this would be a major issue. This diet is so restrictive and difficult to follow that it is not usually the first route that people take to treat epilepsy. There is a lot of great info on this site about the ketogenic diet and tests to get your diagnosis at the resource centre. I hope that all is going well. I am sure you will get to the bottom of this with Lillian, just keep working on it. Try to get some rest though, it will help with the problem solving part! Take care, Tresa (Mama Bear)
