weird seizure triggers?

Tue, 05/23/2006 - 13:30
Hello, I am new to the forum. I have been having symptoms which lead my neurologist to believe I'm having simple and complex partial seizures; he has tentatively diagnosed me with TLE and I've been on 500mg of Keppra twice a day for about a month. I've been having my seizures since late last summer, and they started with OVERWHELMING feelings of deja vu and jamais vu. They seemed to happen every time I was at the gym in the morning, but I initially chalked that up to coincidence. I have been a group fitness instructor for 11 years, love to teach, and love to be at the gym, so I know that in itself isn't a source of stress for me, but I'm coming to the inevitable conclusion that something there is triggering seizures. The last two times I've been there, I've had seizures. I did a little bit of research on low blood sugar, elevated body temperature, and dehydration being seizure triggers, but none of these seem to be significant factors--I drink plenty of water, and I don't work myself to the point of exhaustion or anything. I have seizures other different circumstances, too, but this seems to be the most dependable trigger. Has anyone had a similar experience, or does anyone have insight into this, or other unexplainable seizure triggers they could share? I need to figure this out!

Whenever I listen to music on my headphones, i get auras and de ja vu. Especially if im lying down, sometimes they lead on to a partial seizure.

I cant read from mgazines, newspapers or books, as they cause me dizziness and de ja vu. Even sending texts or looking at my mobile can trigger a partial seizure. However looking at the computor screen dosent bother me

Hi ,

Have read many of your comments and it's interesting to find trends existing that doctors haven't been able to account for with me.

The gym has been the one constant trigger for me. Even when my epiliepsy was mostly controlled with meds, 14 months later or so, it was the gym that would be the trigger. I would go 2-4 times a week so fairly moderate and only for 40 minutes at a time. They would always happen on cardio machines but sometimes as early as 10 minutes into the workout.

After the first couple of times blood tests showed that one of the salt levels in  my blood was too low. My doctor asked how much water I drank in a day. He explained that there are 2 types of salt in the blood , and the epilim I was on at the time (sodium valproate) was being diluted too much by the volume of water I was consuming. Since then I'm much more careful not to overdo the water drinking.

Meds did get altered but still the seizures were triggered while I was doing the cardio equipment. It wasn't the lights (because there were none of those types there). Then I started back again another time, deciding I'll only do 10 minutes then sit down and have a break... I did the workouts like that for a while, then one day walked into to the changing room at the end of a workout and it happened again.

I enjoyed going but the cost of not driving for a year is too great for me to take the risk any more so I've decided not to go. I've taken up ceroc dancing instead which I'm enjoying!

I miss it, and it impacts on how easy I find it to control my weight and shape. I do feel for you guys for whom it is such a big part of your lives though. Very very frustrating.

Maybe some of the other suggestions people have made will provide a basis for some research. There's clearly something going on there wheher it's to do with exertion, electrical pulses from the machines, something to do with repetition and what happens in the brain...

I just wish the medical world's progress would be a bit faster and that they would look at causes as well as treatments.
