topamax for nocturnal tonic-clonic?

Mon, 10/30/2006 - 20:41
ive been on dilantin and my neurologist just put me on topamax. i am rejoicing because i hate the side effects of dilantin and the fact that all my labwork never shows that i have enough in my system to be effective no matter how much i take, but i havent seen anyone post who has been on dilantin and then gone to topamax (or i havent been looking hard enough) my seizures are at night, but they are pretty bad... and i had an EEG that came out normal, but then again i never really got to sleep when i was sleep deprived, i just got drowsy, so i dont think they had me under the appropriate conditions? my mri was normal, just said i had some cysts and polyps that werent anything to worry about... anyway, i was just wondering if anyone had similar circumstances or successes with the meds?

Nocturnal tonic-clonic seizures are the only tonic-clonic seizures I have ever had. Early in the discovery phase of my condition and before my diagnoses, I was put on topamax by an emergency room physician who was concerned that my seizures would cause a secondary heart attack because they tend to cause heart arrhythmia in me. By the time I saw the neurologist I'd been taking the topamax almost three weeks and the doctor agreed not to switch my drug therapy since the topamax seemed to be working for me. Like you, my EEG came out normal, and a later MRI that I had also came out showing no major brain abnormalities. I've had a second EEG recently, but haven't received the results yet. Varying amounts of Topamax are the only AED I've ever been on. I've suffered some pretty nasty side effects with Topamax, but no tonic-clonic seizures. Side effects are an unfortunate reality of any AED.

I have been on Topamax for three years now and even gone through a pregnancy on it. My only side effect has been weight loss. My son was born healthy and they sais the side effect was low birth weight. He was early and almost nine pounds. I have been seizure free (piteite mal) since I have been on it.
