Teeth grinding?

Tue, 10/31/2006 - 19:44
During my check-up at the dentist yesterday, she commented again that while my teeth were OK that I was obviously grinding them whilst sleeping and did I know that there was a connection between TLE and teeth grinding. She had read about the connection just recently and that made me think that I had read a post about it on this site, or had I just imagined it? Anyway has anyone had the same problem, I remember when my seizures were at their most frequent my jaw would often be aching when I woke up. My dentist did suggest that whilst I could have a guard to prevent this happening they are often self-defeating and can lead to the grinding becoming even more intense because your teeth are working even harder against a foreign object in your mouth.

The link you gave was actually the one my dentist was talking about, she had actually looked into the problem herself before our appointment and after reading it I read several other articles along the same lines by Googling Epilepsy/bruxism. The link between the two is there but since my E has become 'controlled' the bruxism has lessened but is still there but nowhere near as bad as it used to be, at least I no longer wake up with an aching jaw like I used to do when my seizures were at there worst.

Hey Honey!!! I too grind my teeth in my sleep bad enough that I woke up the former boyfriend almost every night. As you know he and I hadn't been doing so well, and he was hearing me grind my teeth from the sofa in the other room, so I guess mine is pretty bad. The last time i went to a dentist (it's been A WHILE) they said that my back teeth were very crooked, and I have ground down quite a bit of the enamel. I also want to point out that since those 4 sz's in Sept. I am now talking with a slight lisp, so I must've done something to them even worse (just keeps getting better, huh?). Miss ya...talk to you soon, Susan

Hi Andy, I hate to admit to it, but I too do that. What is interesting is my daughter who hasn't been diagnosed (yet) has had bruxism really bad since she was just a toddler. She had no enamal on her permanent molars when they came in, so she got the metal crowns, which she can't grind down.
