Seizures Returning 4 Years Post Op??

Fri, 08/18/2006 - 22:04
Question: I need other opinions on this- 4 years ago I had a RTLobectomy to remove a benign tumor and seizure focus. Since surgery I have been seizure free until about 6 months ago when I started having episodes of deja vu accompanied by what I call "funky vision" when things just don't look right (a lot like when you've been drinking). I also frequently see spots in my vision (usually black spots but sometimes white or 'clear'). I'm concerned that these are simple partial seizures (aura's) returning. What do you think? I've been debating about going to the neuro for a while because I know she will insist on an MRI and an EEG and quite frankly I don't think either will show anything and I don't want to spend the money on them. My last EEG was a couple of years ago when I thought perhaps I was having simple partial seizures but the EEG showed nothing (not unusual though to have those results). I'm pretty positive there isn't a new tumor growing, but I can't help but feel that these are seizures again (milder than before but still seizures). Do you think this warrants a trip to the neuro or is it something I should just ignore? My mom makes a good point that it might be best to go earlier rather than later in case I need to go on meds again (perhaps keeping them from progressing in severity like they did before).... ?????? stef

Stef, Yes, I do get a foggy, buzzed feeling. In my opinion, that's a simple partial. I have had it happen a few times since my surgery (3/06), and thankfully it hasn't moved onto complex partial (or further). While I have not lost consciousness or awareness, inside I panic when that feeling hits. Thankfully, the feeling passes within 10-15 seconds for me. I would definitely recommend calling your neuro and telling him/her about the experience. I highly doubt that he/she would feel as though you're wasting their time. Better safe than sorry! I can fully understand you $$ concerns, but IMO your health ought to come first. The sooner you DO start treatment (if they are indeed sz's), the better. Best of luck to you! Heather

Heather- It's comforting (in a strange sort of way) that I'm not the only one who has this feeling. I too would consider them a simple partial. I pretty much panic when I get this feeling, afraid of it turning into a cp or worse. What kind of seizures did you have prior to your surgery? Congrats on having a successful surgery. It's a wonderful thing. stef

Hi stef, Prior to surgery, I had simple partials and complex partials. Both sometimes secondarily generalized. I am certainly grateful that I'm only experiencing very occasional s.p.'s, but am very worried about switching off my phenobarbital (since each attempt hasn't gone well at all, leading me to surgery). Things are better since my surgery, but I am hesitant to begin celebrating. We'll see how things go. I hope that things go well for you, and that you talk w/ your doc about what's been happening. Take care! Heather
