Seizures Heart arrhythmia

1. Anyone know if a seizure can cause your heart to have an irregular ryhthm? 2. Does it work the other way around...can an arrhythmia cause a seizure? 3. For people who have experienced this, can it feel like it's almost skipping a beat?

Yes a seizure can cause your heart to beat either faster or slower than normal. Many people don't realize the change because they lose awareness as to what is going so quickly that they don't feel their heart racing. I have temporal lobe epilepsy and don't lose awareness quickly. My heart races so fast and I feel like I can't breath and then all the sudden a few minutes past that I can't remember. I thought for many years that the rapid heart beats caused my seizures because I was so "with it" but I had a video EEG and I actually went into the seizure a few seconds before my heartbeat changed. My doctor told me that it is more common for people to have changes in their heart who have complex partial seizures. I hope this helps.

"Anyone know if a seizure can cause your heart to have an irregular ryhthm?" Yes, a seizure can. In fact, that's one of the worst ones I've had - three or four years ago. The seizure threw my heart into atrial fibrillation, and I don't even have heart problems. The symptoms can easily be misdiagnosed as evidence of heart problems, though, as happened with me. It took a bit of convincing, but I had the facts on my side. Also helpful were the half-dozen tests which showed no sign of heart trouble. I consider it an extra incentive to remember my meds. :D

Heart trouble My seizures almost always cause trouble with my heart rhythms. My last tonic-clonic affected my heart rate substantially and I came close to having a heart attack. I was told this by the attending ER physician who was oversaw my care after I was brought into the hospital via ambulance. A few days ago I had a localized break-through seizure (I'm changing meds at the moment)that affected my vision, slowed my neuro responses and DROPPED my heart rate so low my school nurse (I work at an elementary school) wanted to call 911 and send me to the ER. I refused, assuming I'd recover normally. I did. As for arrhythmia causing a seizure, I THINK, but don't KNOW, that some types of heart problems can cause blood flow problems severe enough to cause the brain to become starved for oxygen. If this happens, I think that a person can have a looks-like-epileptic-but-not-epileptic-seizure. If you are concerned about heart problems you may have to consult a carrdiologist.
