Phantom smells

Tue, 08/15/2006 - 17:33
Hi all I was just wondering for those of you who have phantom smells as part of your seizures how long the smell lasted for. Sometimes the smells I get can last a minutes but over the weekend the smells were very short (if that makes sence). I had lots of them then yesterday I had a 40 min simple partial (horrible and scary as I have never had one that long, usually they are 5 mins max). I was wondering if this was normal to have phantom smells that did not last that long (few secs). thanks Hayley xxx

Hayley, I had a period of about an hour and a half the other day of serial seizures- simple partial. The ER doc gave me a script for alprazolam to take when they start to repeat like that. You might want to look into that as the continuous seizure activity is NOT good for you. Good look, and feel free to read my blog to compare notes. Sam

I have the continual phantom smells and tastes too, or so it seems. It could be they start and stop and then start up again and I'm not noticing the stopping times. I smell burnt rubber or hot wood the majority of the time and get a metallic taste in my mouth alot. It drives me crazy! I am so tired of getting up to check and see if there is a reason for the smell but worry that the one time I don't...there will be a real reason. -Spiz

Sam, What meds were you on when you had the continuous seizures? I used to have continuous seizures about every third day when I was on Tegretol. But, I haven't had continuous seizures since I switched to Topomax. SLJ
