Lamictal vs. Keppra

Mon, 06/21/2010 - 09:11

I am 25 I have simple-partial, complex-partial, and tonic-clonic seizures.  I was put on Depakote, but that didn't work.  So I was switched to Keppra XR, but it gave me suicidal thoughts and severe depression.  Now I'm titrating Lamictal XR into my system while I'm weaning off the Keppra, and at this point, I don't know which one is causing the current side effects.

The tremors, extreme weakness and fatigue, shortness of breath, insomnia, and loss of apetite are some of the expected side effects.  What worries me is the fact that I keep forgetting things, as if they were completely erased from my memory!  And then there are times when I feel that I'm just going to collapse and pass out..but I hear that's normal too.

I guess I have two questions; Is the memeory loss normal, and is there a point where one says 'enough with the medications!' ?

I've been on lamictal(lamotrigene) these past 5 years & I don't know if it's age or what it is, but within past 4 years I've noticed a sharp increase in "cracking" my spine and shoulders. Im too sore to do it first thing in the morning, but later on throughout the day I do it easily even if laying on bed and shrugging. Im not a strenous yoga person.

Im flexible enough though.Maybe I'm just putting too much into it. Perhaps it's just normal ageing ??

Reg lamictal. If you guys

Reg lamictal. If you guys have problems with your bones, Lamictal is known to absorb Vit D and many people who are on lamictal are vit d deficient. Vid D is necessary to absorb Calcium. If you are def. you will have difficulties with this, hence especially women are prone to get osteoporosis. This, the docs will not tell you about or just ignore and don't care. Calcium is needed for mental health as well as Vit D. I take multi, vit d, fish oil, Vit B50 complex every day. Hope this helps...

I just got switched off from keppra XR to generic lamictal 4 days ago because of recent rage and irritation and suicidal thoughts I am going thru the side effects and its just as long if not a longer list of side effects and yes that crazy rash side effect was funny too cause it seems like of all the side effects she definitely stressed that one like its death ... But I just feel like an experiment at this point I don't want to keep taking meds I'm not good with remembering to take meds and carrying meds Doctor told me it takes 6 weeks to kick in but I'm reading other time frames and how am I supposed to know if the side effects are from keppra XR or the new medicine since some of the side effects are same/similar ... I've also been referred to a psychiatrist to weed out if my suicidal/anger bursts are from the medicine or personal reasons :-/ ... Also this is post brain surgery makes me feel like I should have skipped out on surgery
