Is it a Seizure or am I just plain LOSING it??????

Wed, 05/16/2007 - 12:59
I have a hard time understanding if I have had a seizure or after affects of medication. I have complex partial seizures and am challenged in determining what is a seizure and when I am just plain losing it! Some seizures are evident: noises become distorted, confusion takes over, fatigue follows, excessive sensitivity to most everything to the point that you want to be left alone in a quiet room and not be bothered. Other times, I feel a bit displaced and overwhelmed, like a panic attack, but I realize that what appears to present itself as a panic attack may actually be a seizure. How do you know? Does anyone else feel this way? What the HE(double hockey sticks) is going on with my brain?? Sometimes it seems as though I was better before they put me on all this yucky medication. If you're still going to have seizures, then what is the point in taking it?

I can almost guarantee you that it a partial seizure. I've had episodes like that all my life, and two years ago I was diagnosed with complex partial. However, because I (and it sounds like you too) don't really lose consciousness, it seems to me to be more like a simple partial. Some people have these as "auras" before it develops into a bigger seizure. The point of vagueness for me is a blotchy memory afterwards... so I'm still trying to figure that out. I actually came to the conclusion that the meds were worse than the symptoms, and went off Keppra before I was up to full dosage. It was debilitating me to the point that I couldn't go to school or work. The meds vs. seizures conundrum is something everyone has to consider on their own, I think, due to the diversity in experiences and effects. Good luck!

Thanks! I will have to keep that in mind as I certainly feel worse since the seizures began again and I am now on all this medication (Keppra) as well. I also suffer from insomnia and that is a huge trigger for me when I don't get enough sleep. You can count on the fact that it'll be a rough day when I don't get enough rest. Now, they give me Seroquel to sleep as Lunesta, Ambien and Trazodone do not help me to sleep at all. What a vicious cycle this is. I understand the challenges we face with time loss and blotchy memory episodes as well. In fact, just yesterday I was on the computer starting around 8am and before I knew it it was 1pm and I had no idea what I had been doing for the better part of 5 hours. My Keppra dosage as of now is 1000mg twice daily plus 50mg of the Seroquel at night. Next dilemma, am I really living, or is this just one mixed up nightmare that you never awaken from. Thanks for your response. You have given me things to ponder. Take care. Michelle
