Flashing Lights In Grocery Stores

Thu, 03/08/2007 - 20:52
I don't have epilepsy. I have a severely debilitating migraine problem. One of my triggers is flashing lights. All my local grocery stores have recently installed these little coupon dispensers with little red flashing lights on them. Something about the way the flashes are spaced so far apart or at random makes these things the worst migraine trigger I have ever encountered. I was wondering if any of you are having seizure trouble with these things as well, and have any ideas about what can be done about it. I have been complaining to all the local general managers and emailing some of the grocery store corporate offices about my problem, but so far nobody seems to care about one person who can no longer go into their grocery stores because of something so stupid and unneccesary as a coupon dispenser. Now my poor husband who is already too busy with work has to take over the grocery shopping.

Regarding Blue tint on glasses to help with flashing lights... the doctor I spoke with said that in 20 years he has never heard of blue tint being used for this, only #1 Rose tint. He said he will look into the blue for me. He didn't think the rose tint would help me much. He said the most important things to have for this problem are polarized lenses and anti-reflective coating. He said since I already have these on my sunglasses, the rose isn't going to help much. He said I am just extremly sensitive to flashing lights. But my regluar glasses that I wear indoors, only have the AR coating. I am going to find out if I you can get polarized clear lenses.

Hey troublecat, I have Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy. I'm not one of the types that usually have problems w/ flashing lights. I get severe migraines as well, but usually w/ different triggers. I have noticed though that if I already have a severe migraine that something as stupid as a small or large flashing light will increase the intensity of my migraine, so at those times I usually wear dark sunglasses to help. Otherwise it doesn't really affect me. You should get your problem checked out and see what happens. Take care and hope you find a reasonable solution to your problem. huntress22

Huntress22, I had some special custom sunglasses made that are as dark as welding goggles. They block out about 99% of the light, whereas you can usually only get sunglasses made that will block out 90%, and these do nothing for me. They are motorcycle sunglasses that have foam around the eyecup that seals to your skin and helps to block out the light (The top vent was letting in too much light, so I filled the thin piece of foam with black acrylic paint). They are polarized and have a silver mirror coating which really helps reduce the reflections off the cars. I wear them preventatively, whenever I go outside or drive, and I also use a parasol outside to keep the sun out of my eyes. These glasses are wonderful and make me much more comfortable and reduce the severity of my headaches, but unfortunately, they don't do much for anything flashing. I have been seeing doctors for 4 years trying to resolve this problem, and they have done every test on me they could think of. 3 Neurologists, an ENT, and a Cardiologist. I don't know who else to go to. If you have any suggestions, I would love it if you would share them with me. I highly recommend the extra-dark motorcycle sunglasses (pan optx) to anyone who is light sensitive or gets migraines. If anyone is interested, I can get the information on the coating lab that was willing to make lenses as dark as I wanted, as a lot of labs won't do it because of liability. Or you can wear welding goggles like I did before I got these made. Get an extra piece of the dark glass, have it cut in half, then cut holes in the sides of the goggles as close to the front glass as possible, and tape them in on the edges with duct tape. This gives you peripheral vision so you can drive with them. Although, they are probably not legal. I pulled them off my head every time I saw a cop. You can experiment to find the level of darkness that works for you. Probably anywhere from a #5-#8. Anything darker you can't see through. Also, I removed the extra piece that flips up and down, and the clear plastic piece over the glass, because it distorts your vision. These are great to have around for when a migraine hits!
