Explaining to people why you do not drive

Mon, 08/27/2007 - 16:47
Do you think I should tell people why I do not drive? I always feel like I need to explain myself. I have talked to people who thought I did not drive because of DUI's. I never know whether I should tell people that I have epilepsy. I do not live in a pedestian friendly area and I am usually the only one waiting for the bus in my neighborhood. I am self-employed and I never know how many people I should tell. I feel like sometimes people think I am brain damaged and will not want to hire me.

I understand your pain-I had to park my truck recently, and you feel like you are undera microscope after you tell them. All I want is the freedom to come/go on my own without having to depend on others. I am 46,and with this situation,it makes you feel second class and over the hill. Its depressing.

In trying to be light-hearted about it, I often jokingly say, "Think of all the money this epilepsy is saving me in gas prices." I have to, after working on and driving cars for a living from basic transportation to one of a kind collector Corvettes, when I could drive, I was a little spoiled in the machines I operated for a living. If you were to tell me I was not allowed to drive before E hit me, I might have said something like, "That's because Miss America is coming to pick me up, and she insists on doing the driving."
