drowsinessworse with Keppra

Sun, 03/30/2008 - 23:51

Hi everyone- I am new to this forum and I hope somebody can give me some insight. I have been on dilantin for 26 years and now my new neurologist is having me switch to Keppra. I am still waiting for the results of my bone density scan. My biggest problem is the drowsiness and I haven't even started my full dose yet. I can barely make it through the day without caffeine in my system. I started drinking coffee the same year I started on dilantin because I couldn't stay awake in school. It didn't help that my first class of the day was physics!  Anyways, I have to drink twice as much coffee in order to function normally and I want to know if anyone has had side effects that persisted after going off there original medicine? Any advice in combating drowsiness while on AED? Thanks, nancy

I've been on Keppra for quite some time. Taking meds for 26 years. All this started when I was a teen. I was on 500 mg  2x of Keppra, then 750 2x  and now 1000 mg  2x. I just started the 1000 a fews ago. I feel so tired all the time and don't even want to work anymore. The only connection I think is it might be the increase. I drive, work and live a normal life with most people not knowing of this issue. The increase was due to to a few things popping out. I have the same issue and say every day "How do you go on like this". I was thinking it was maybe its the people I work with that make tired, unmotivated and cause massive stress, but maybe it's a  combo of all these things. I also do a massive coffee in the morning.

Oh my god! Thank god for

Oh my god! Thank god for Google! I thought that falling asleep all the time was just- me. I was loosing my mind! I have been taking Keppra for over 3 years and I have been falling asleep "all the time" and "every where," I could be doing anything. I didn't know when the neurologist said "drowsiness" that he actually meant that I will be so "tired" "exhausted" that I would happily fall asleep in the middle of the a busy highway- if meant I could just 15 of sleep!!!! I just started back taking classes and I am sleeping 4 times a day because I keep falling asleep where someone would normally take a nap- except it's like 2-4 hours nap. I've had enough and I'm getting off of it immediately. Thank you all for posting I learned a lot today!
