Driving and grand mals w/ no aura

Fri, 09/29/2006 - 11:03
I was diagnosed with E in 2003. I really thought I would never drive again. However, this week I have been considering it because I'm applying for a job I will love that requires driving. I have tonic clonic seizures (seizure free for 2.5 years thanks in part to lamictal) and have never had an aura. This has always concerned me in terms of driving, so I have used public transportation or walked everywhere. A few months ago my doctor said that I now have the same risk as any adult of having a seizure while driving. He said that the type of seizures I have doesn't matter because the stats are based on all types. Still, I know that if I were to have a seizure it would be a bad situation and I would not have enough warning to pull off the road. I feel like I'm at the point that either I will never drive because it's too risky without an aura or else I should start driving. I no longer feel that this is something that is just going to take time until I'm comfortable. It feels like decision time. Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks!

Thanks for your response. After being on dilantin, trileptal, and keppra, I found lamictal. It is a godsend. Thanks to that, yoga, and good rest and diet, I have not had a seizure since April 2004. I feel very fortunate. Sorry to hear about the side effects from Keppra. I didn't have those but it was not strong enough. I had a lot of seizures when I was on it. All the best to you. I hope you soon find a drug combo that works. Check into lamictal. JJ
